India To Send Technical Team To Venezuela To Explore New Energy Opportunities

Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri recently met with Delcy Rodriguez, the Acting President of Venezuela, in New Delhi. During the meeting, Puri indicated that a technical team from India is scheduled to visit Venezuela soon to assess potential opportunities in the energy sector. He took to social media platform X to share insights on the longstanding partnership between India and Venezuela, which has been in place since 2008.

Puri emphasised the unique complementarities between the two nations, noting that Venezuela holds the largest proven oil reserves globally. He pointed out that while India has a significant demand for energy, it also possesses the technological expertise and resources required to effectively refine Venezuelan crude oil at its refineries.

As of the months of April and May 2026, Venezuela was already one of the largest suppliers of crude oil to India, highlighting the existing relationship and its future potential. Puri’s remarks suggest that the Indian technical team’s forthcoming visit aims to further explore and enhance this collaboration.

Exploring New Collaborations in Energy Sector

Puri elaborated on the existing investments made by Indian oil and gas companies in Venezuela. He indicated a strong willingness to pursue new collaborative opportunities that would bolster the bilateral energy partnership. He stated, “Our companies are looking forward to not just building upon the existing investments but also seeking new avenues for fruitful collaborations that support our quest for energy security.”

On the same day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held discussions with Rodriguez concerning a variety of cooperative areas, focusing on energy, critical minerals, and technology. PM Modi expressed the significance of India’s relationship with Venezuela, especially in the context of the Global South, underlining potential mutual benefits for both countries.

Expressing his positive outlook on bilateral relations, Modi shared details of the extensive talks, which covered cooperation in sectors including energy, agriculture, health, and trade. This dialogue aimed at solidifying ties between India and Venezuela, reinforcing their strategic partnership and shared objectives.

Continued Commitment to Strengthening Bilateral Relations

Both leaders reviewed the multifaceted relationship between India and Venezuela, seeking new areas for collaboration across various sectors, such as healthcare and trade. They also delved into global and regional matters of mutual concern during their discussions.

The commitment of both nations to deepen their bilateral partnership was reaffirmed, with emphasis on advancing their shared interests and those of the Global South. The dialogue underscored the importance of cooperation in addressing significant global challenges and fostering economic growth.

Rodriguez is currently on a five-day diplomatic visit to India, further solidifying Venezuela’s role as an important partner in energy and investment for India. Indian public sector undertakings have made notable contributions to the energy sector in Venezuela, and there remains strong enthusiasm for exploring further opportunities in enhancing this partnership.
