India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, thanked Venezuela for recognising India’s humanitarian efforts following the double earthquake that struck on June 24. The acknowledgement highlights the strong bond of friendship and cooperation between the two nations. Jaiswal’s remarks were made via a post on the social media platform X, where he referred to the initiative as #OperationAmistad.

In his message, Jaiswal stated, “Thank you for your kind words. It was an honour to serve the people of Venezuela through #OperationAmistad.” This statement was made in response to a release from Venezuela’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs acknowledging the assistance provided by India in the wake of the natural disaster.

Venezuela Thanks Indian Rescuers for Their Assistance

The Venezuelan Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a press release on July 7, thanking the Indian medical and rescue teams for their invaluable assistance after the earthquakes. It detailed the arrival of 41 Indian doctors and paramedics on June 27 as part of international response efforts to aid those affected. The release noted that the humanitarian team established a field hospital at the National Institute of Hipódromos in La Rinconada, Caracas.

According to official information, over 1,900 individuals benefited from the medical services provided at the field hospital set up by the Indian team. The Venezuelan government highlighted the welcome the Indian contingent received and expressed appreciation for the assistance rendered during this critical time.

At Simon Bolivar International Airport in La Guaira, a farewell ceremony took place, where Vice Minister for International Communication, Rander Pena, expressed gratitude to the Indian personnel and to India’s Ambassador to Venezuela, PK Ashok Babu, who was present.

Operational Details of ‘Operation Amistad’

As part of its ongoing commitment, the Indian Army Field Hospital continued its relief efforts in Venezuela following the earthquake. On July 6, MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal provided updates on the operation, stating, “Operation Amistad: Extending a helping hand. Making a difference. The Army Field Hospital’s relief efforts in Venezuela.” This signifies India’s active role in providing emergency medical aid to those impacted by the disaster.

The Indian Embassy in Venezuela confirmed that as part of Operation Amistad, India had donated two BHISHM cubes, which are portable medical facilities designed for use in emergency situations. In addition, Indian Army doctors conducted a live demonstration for Venezuelan medical staff on how to effectively utilise these resources.

The humanitarian mission, defined as Operation Amistad, was initiated to aid Venezuela in the aftermath of the June 24 earthquakes, involving the deployment of qualified medical personnel for effective emergency medical response. According to Jorge Rodriguez, President of the National Assembly of Venezuela, the official casualty figures reported on July 7 indicated that 3,685 lives had been lost due to the earthquakes, with 16,740 injuries recorded and 86,794 families receiving humanitarian assistance. Approximately 17,907 individuals were reported displaced as a result of the disaster, highlighting the extensive impact of the tragic events.
