India Needs to Nurture Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for Test Cricket

The CSR Journal Magazine

Harbhajan Singh, the former Indian spinner, has emphasised the importance of nurturing teenage cricketer Vaibhav Sooryavanshi if he is to realise his potential in Test cricket. During a recent event to celebrate the birthday of legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, Harbhajan spoke about the challenges young players face as they embark on their careers. He underlined that a thoughtful approach is essential for developing a successful Test player.

Harbhajan pointed out that players inevitably encounter highs and lows early in their professional journeys. He believes that providing consistent opportunities can significantly influence their growth, both in skills and mentality. According to him, a young player who has the ability to strike the ball effectively must also learn defensive techniques. “If you provide him with chances, he will adapt,” Harbhajan remarked.

Caution Against Premature Exposure to Overseas Conditions

The former cricketer cautioned against sending young talents to challenging foreign conditions too early in their careers. He identified countries like England, where swing bowling presents considerable difficulties, as places that could potentially hinder a young player’s progress. “If he is sent to England without adequate preparation, it may not be a matter of intelligence; it is vital to nurture talent appropriately if we want him to succeed in Test cricket,” Harbhajan stated.

Harbhajan suggested that the Indian cricket system must place more emphasis on the significance of Test matches. He stated that the preparation of pitches conducive to five-day games is essential for player development. Balanced playing surfaces not only allow for thorough testing of batsmen but also ensure bowlers, particularly spinners, do not receive excessive support.

“I firmly recommend prioritising Test cricket, as it showcases the finest level of competition over five days,” Harbhajan added. He explained that the shifting challenges over five days demand players to adapt continuously, promoting both mental and physical resilience.

Building Temperament for Red-Ball Cricket

Harbhajan also highlighted the need for young batsmen like Sooryavanshi and Ayush Mhatre to cultivate the temperament required for red-ball formats. He mentioned that current players like Yashasvi Jaiswal serve as a benchmark for the upcoming generation. Their ability to balance aggressive batting with defensive skills is crucial for success at the Test level.

He noted that aspiring cricketers must make a strong case for their inclusion in national Test squads. “Future talents will need to create the right buzz around their performances to earn selection,” he stated. Harbhajan indicated that Jaiswal has excelled in this regard, showcasing adaptability in both T20 and Test formats.

Moreover, he stressed that while it is essential for upcoming players like Sooryavanshi and Ishan Kishan to adopt an aggressive batting style, they must also develop the knack for defending when conditions turn favourable for bowlers. “Those few cricketers with a flexible mindset, like Jaiswal, have successfully established themselves,” Harbhajan remarked, highlighting the dual skill set needed in modern cricket.
