The Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel initiated the deployment of 139 new buses aimed at providing safe and timely transportation for tribal students. This initiative is part of the Bhagwan Birsa Munda Janjatiya Gaurav Parivahan Seva, which focuses on enhancing commuting facilities for students from remote and hilly areas within the state.

The newly launched buses were flagged off alongside Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi in Gandhinagar. This joint effort between the Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) and the State Government’s Tribal Development Department represents a financial investment of Rs. 33.84 crore.

In total, the State Government has committed to supplying 250 buses for tribal students, which will cost approximately Rs. 72 crore. This initiative aims to facilitate easier access to educational institutions for children and youth residing in difficult-to-reach locations, thus enhancing their educational opportunities.

Previous Initiatives and Future Expectations

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had previously launched 111 buses under this scheme on November 15 of last year, commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda. These buses were introduced in Dediapada, located in the Narmada district, providing critical support to tribal communities.

With the addition of these 139 new buses, it is anticipated that over 4,100 students will benefit from improved transport services that facilitate their daily travel to schools and colleges. The programme aims not only to provide transportation but also to advance girls’ education and enhance the prospects of higher education within these communities.

Officials believe this initiative will lead to improved attendance rates in educational institutions while also working towards reducing the dropout rate among tribal students. The bus services are expected to establish a more reliable means of access to education.

Bus Features and Monitoring Systems

All buses included in this transport initiative are equipped with GPS technology, enabling real-time monitoring of their routes and schedules. This technological integration aims to enhance safety and efficiency for students commuting to and from educational institutions.

A web portal is also being developed to provide regular updates regarding the service. Information accessible through this portal will include the names and details of students utilising the transport, bus pass numbers, routes, and data on affiliated schools and villages.

Furthermore, after school and college hours, these buses will be utilised under a revenue model to serve the needs of local residents in tribal areas, thereby contributing additional value to the community.

Following the introduction of the initial 111 buses, a significant number of students from tribal districts have benefitted since the commencement of this programme. The services are projected to aid around 5,700 students during the 2026-27 academic year, further promoting educational accessibility among tribal youth.

The flag-off event was attended by various dignitaries, including Tribal Development Minister Naresh Patel and Members of the Legislative Assembly from tribal regions, along with high-ranking officials from the relevant departments.
