IMD Issues Red Alert as Thunderstorms, Hail and Strong Winds Hit Delhi-NCR

The CSR Journal Magazine

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced critical nowcast alerts for various regions, predicting intense thunderstorms, lightning, hail, and strong winds in the coming hours. Significant weather events are currently impacting the Delhi-NCR area.

Multiple districts in Delhi have been placed under “red warnings,” including Central, East, North, New, North East, North West, Shahdara, South West, and West Delhi. In neighbouring Haryana, areas such as Bhiwani, Charkhi Dadri, Hisar, Jhajjar, Jind, Karnal, Panipat, Rohtak, and Sonipat are also affected by these severe alerts. Additionally, Mahoba in Uttar Pradesh has been included in this critical weather forecast.

The affected regions are expected to experience severe thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, hail, gusty winds ranging from 60 to 80 kmph, and moderate rainfall measuring between 5 to 15 mm per hour.

Extended Warnings for Other States

“Orange warnings” are currently in effect for parts of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and southern districts of Delhi. These warnings indicate the likelihood of thunderstorms with wind speeds of 40 to 60 kmph alongside moderate rainfall.

A midnight update from the IMD on May 4 noted that thunderstorm and duststorm activities, accompanied by light to moderate rainfall and lightning, are anticipated across various parts of Delhi and the National Capital Region. This weather pattern is expected to extend into districts in Haryana, western Uttar Pradesh, and parts of Rajasthan over the subsequent two hours.

The IMD’s proactive warnings have been issued to keep residents informed and prepared for the significant weather changes expected in the region.

Flight Operations Affected Due to Severe Weather

Similarly, IndiGo released a travel advisory indicating that the ongoing poor weather conditions have led to disruptions in their flight schedules. The airline is actively monitoring the situation and is committed to ensuring safe operations. Passengers are encouraged to stay updated through the airline’s website or mobile application for further information.

IndiGo has also expressed their commitment to traveller safety by stating that support teams are available to assist affected customers. The airline remains hopeful for a swift return to regular operations once conditions improve.

In light of the severe weather, authorities have recommended that residents remain indoors wherever feasible. They have urged the public to avoid seeking shelter under trees or unstable structures, limit unnecessary travel, and adhere to official advisories as the weather situation develops.
