How a Jaipur Woman Allegedly Became Part of a JeM Sleeper Cell Network

The CSR Journal Magazine

A woman allegedly linked with outfit Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) was arrested by the Rajasthan Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) in Jaipur on Tuesday. She has been allegedly operating as a sleeper cell from Pink City Jaipur. After receiving the intel from the military, the ATS took swift action. She has been booked under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and is under interrogation.

Conversation and recruitment

The woman has been identified as Babita Dhakad. As per recent media reports, she got converted by reciting Kalma virtually and then after changing her name to Khadija. Currently investigators are trying to find out if she was recruited online and then converted, or she first converted and then recruited.

Sources revealed that the woman has been in continuous touch with a Jaish-e-Mohammad handler via social media.

Concerns over digital networks usage

It is alleged that the woman was in touch with the terrorist outfit via social media, raising concerns over the growing use of the digital platforms by terrorist outfits for their activities. Initial findings are that her mobile phone history suggests that she has been in regular touch with foreign contacts and currently her social media account is being examined.

One ATS official shared that the woman has been detained and is under surveillance and her activities could cause national threat. “Currently we are investigating her links with other terror outfits and also trying to find out whether she is a part of any wider radicalisation or recruitment network that is operational in other states as well.” He added that further investigation is being done to decode the circumstances that led to her recruitment and her alleged connection with Pakistan-based handlers.

Talking about more arrests, he said, currently there are no more arrests as investigation is on, but there are high possibilities of arresting many more. “We haven’t ruled out further arrests possibilities as the investigation is on.”
