The Meteorological Department has issued a significant weather alert affecting several districts in Uttarakhand, prompting the Rudraprayag administration to enhance safety measures for devotees participating in the Kedarnath Yatra. The atmospheric situation in the region has escalated, and the forecast suggests strong winds, frequent electrical storms, and severe thunderstorms.

Areas anticipated to experience adverse weather include Almora, Chamoli, Pauri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh. Specific locations cited by the weather department for potential lightning strikes and thunderstorms are Berinag, Chopta, Ukhimath, Gopeshwar, Thalisain, Kedarnath, Kotdwar, Munsyari, Didihat, and Ranikhet, among others. Meteorologists predict that wind speeds could reach between 30 to 40 kmph.

Preparedness Measures by Local Administration

With the number of pilgrims visiting Kedarnath Dham increasing, the Rudraprayag district administration has opted for a proactive approach in ensuring safety. Following the alert, all tiered administrative offices have entered a state of high alert. This initiative includes rigorous safety protocols along the pilgrimage route, within transit camps, and throughout the temple complex, as stated by local officials.

According to the district administration, the current influx of devotees necessitates heightened vigilance from all officials and agencies involved in managing the pilgrimage. A functioning queue management system has been implemented to facilitate the orderly conduct of the yatra, limiting congestion and ensuring safety.

Vishal Mishra, the District Magistrate of Rudraprayag, reiterated the commitment of officials to minimise any disturbances for visitors. He noted that the Chief Minister has emphasised that devotees participating in the Chardham Yatra should have a smooth experience. Monitoring with drones, along with systematic parking arrangements, is underway at Sonprayag, where congregation levels are typically high.

Local authorities are actively overseeing the Kedarnath Yatra route in anticipation of the substantial number of pilgrims. The administration has indicated readiness to pause the Yatra should weather conditions deteriorate, ensuring that travel remains safe.
