Telegram has stated that reports regarding its downfall are unfounded after the messaging application faced a temporary suspension from the Apple App Store. The app was re-listed less than a day later, prompting the company to address the situation on its official account on X, the platform previously known as Twitter.

In a subtle reference to Apple, Telegram’s post included the well-known phrase, “Reports of my demise are greatly exaggerated,” along with an apple emoji. This comes after users attempting to access the app on the App Store encountered a message stating, “The page you’re looking for can’t be found.” Although Telegram confirmed the app’s restoration, it did not provide details regarding the cause of its prior absence.

The reason for the suspension remains unclear, as Apple has chosen not to comment on the incident. This ambiguity adds to the ongoing controversies surrounding the app, which has previously attracted attention for various reasons.

Pavel Durov Faces Legal Challenges Amid Scrutiny

While the app experienced a brief outage, its founder and CEO Pavel Durov is under heightened scrutiny from both Russian and Western authorities. Durov has long positioned himself as a proponent of free speech, yet he has often found himself at odds with the Kremlin and other governmental entities.

Recently, Russia’s Federal Security Service, known as the FSB, accused Durov of facilitating what it called terrorist activities, subsequently placing his name on international wanted lists. In defiance, Durov shared an image on Telegram’s official account, expressing his disdain towards the accusations.

His history of clashes with the Kremlin is marked by his resistance against attempts to impose restrictions on Telegram, which he has publicly described as an affront to free expression. Durov’s contentious relationship with powerful entities complicates the app’s global presence.

Concerns About Misinformation and Usage in India

Launched in 2013, Telegram claims to have over 1 billion active users globally. The platform offers features such as individual chats, group discussions, and channels that can broadcast messages to a large audience. Unlike other messaging services, such as Meta’s WhatsApp, Telegram allows group sizes to expand to as many as 200,000 participants, raising concerns among experts about the rapid dissemination of misinformation.

In June 2026, Telegram faced temporary restrictions in India just before the re-test for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). Authorities feared that the platform could be exploited by fraudsters to distribute fake examination papers, thereby posing a risk to students.

The ongoing challenges faced by Telegram highlight the delicate balance between communication platforms and regulatory bodies. As concerns about misinformation, security, and user safety grow, the app’s management must navigate these complications strategically.
