BJP National Spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia has accused Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition, of intentionally disrupting the functioning of Parliament to evade scrutiny of the Congress party’s past record concerning the repatriation of fugitives. Bhatia’s comments were made during a press conference on August 5, where he outlined his concerns regarding Gandhi’s alleged behaviour.

Bhatia specifically mentioned that between 2019 and 2026, the Indian government successfully brought back 274 fugitives from 36 countries. He asserted that this achievement highlights a significant contrast with the Congress party’s history and claimed that it reflects a lack of political will during its time in power.

The BJP spokesperson described Gandhi as an “immature” and “irresponsible” leader, questioning his motives for allegedly preventing important discussions within the Parliament. He conveyed that the issue of fugitive repatriation is critically important and deserves attention in the legislative assembly.

BJP’s Achievements in Fugitive Repatriation

Bhatia elaborated on the BJP’s claims regarding their approach to handling fugitives, stating that an average of around 40 fugitives have been brought back to India each year since 2019. He noted that these individuals were tracked down and arrested before being returned to the country to stand trial, which he regarded as a testament to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to justice.

According to Bhatia, the Modi government has managed to recover roughly Rs 19,000 crore from these returned fugitives, asserting that this sum highlights the effectiveness of their strategies. He accused the Congress party of lacking both the determination and the technological capability to achieve similar outcomes during its governance.

During the conference, Bhatia maintained that the opposition party is resistant to transparency, as revealing such statistics would compel the public to question why similar efforts were not made in the past when the Congress was in power. He underscored that his party will continue to focus on such accomplishments to reinforce the BJP’s stance on governance.

Criticism of Rahul Gandhi’s Parliamentary Role

Bhatia further criticised Rahul Gandhi for allegedly neglecting his duties as the Leader of the Opposition. He argued that it is imperative for Gandhi to actively participate in parliamentary debates when the legislature is in session, rather than making disparaging remarks outside the House.

In his statements, Bhatia suggested that Gandhi’s frequent public criticisms of Modi reflect a deep-seated fear and insecurity regarding his own position. He described this as detrimental to the integrity expected from a leader in such a vital role, labelling his actions as an unwillingness to engage in constructive discourse.

Additionally, the BJP spokesperson highlighted Gandhi’s remarks made abroad, suggesting that they undermine India’s democratic values. Bhatia stated that such conduct is unbecoming for someone in a leadership position and should warrant scrutiny from the electorate.

Commemoration of Article 370 Abrogation

On the same day, Bhatia commemorated the seventh anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370, which previously conferred special status to Jammu and Kashmir. He deemed this an important milestone in Indian governance and praised Union Home Minister Amit Shah for his role in its implementation.

Bhatia emphasised the significance of this legislative change, which restructured Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir, with a legislature, and Ladakh, without. He asserted that this move aligns with constitutional values and is a hallmark of the current government’s commitment to national integrity.

Overall, the BJP spokesperson’s remarks highlight ongoing tensions between the two major political parties regarding their respective records on governance and accountability, especially on critical issues such as national security and legislative responsibility.
