The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to convene an important meeting of its Uttarakhand Core Committee at the party headquarters in New Delhi on Wednesday evening. This gathering will focus on preparations for the upcoming Assembly elections in the state, which are crucial for the party’s electoral strategy.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, along with state BJP president Mahendra Bhatt and other prominent state leaders, will be present at this meeting. In addition, national BJP president Nitin Nabin and National General Secretary (Organisation) BL Santosh are also expected to attend, underscoring the significance of this assembly.

Preparation for Upcoming Elections Under Review

This meeting occurs shortly after the BJP faced recent electoral setbacks. The party lost the Bankipur assembly seat in Bihar to Jan Suraaj Party president Prashant Kishore, with a significant margin of 19,324 votes over BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar. Additionally, in the Datia assembly constituency of Madhya Pradesh, Congress candidate Ghanshyam Singh emerged victorious against BJP’s Ashutosh Tiwari by 6,016 votes. However, in Gujarat’s Majalpur constituency, BJP’s Satendrabhai Patel won against Congress candidate Bhikhabhai Rabari by a considerable margin of 30,630 votes.

Context of the Assembly Elections

The last elections for Uttarakhand’s 70-member assembly took place in February 2022. During those elections, the BJP, led by Pushkar Singh Dhami, secured 47 seats, exceeding the 35-seat majority threshold. The Indian National Congress was able to win 19 seats. This upcoming election is particularly significant for the BJP as it seeks to secure a third consecutive term after being in power since 2017, initially with Trivendra Singh Rawat as Chief Minister.

Pushkar Singh Dhami took over the position of Chief Minister in July 2021, replacing Rawat. The BJP’s continued governance has created a platform for the party to leverage its achievements while campaigning for re-election in the upcoming cycle.
