Heavy Rain Disrupts Mumbai Airport Operations Leading to Flight Cancellations

The CSR Journal Magazine

Heavy rainfall and strong winds significantly affected flight activities at Mumbai’s international airport on Sunday. As a result, the airport authorities suspended all runway operations for approximately one hour, leading to widespread cancellations, diversions, and delays for numerous flights. Reports indicate that four flights operated by IndiGo were cancelled due to these adverse weather conditions.

In addition to the cancellations, thirteen incoming flights from various airlines were diverted to alternate airports. These diverted flights eventually returned to Mumbai once conditions improved. According to data from the flight tracking website flightradar24.com, around ninety per cent of outbound flights were delayed, averaging a hold-up of sixty-five minutes, while forty-five per cent of incoming flights also experienced delays.

Officials from Mumbai International Airport, which is co-owned by the Adani Group and the Airports Authority of India, issued a statement indicating that adverse weather, including gusts of wind reaching up to forty-two knots coupled with reduced visibility due to the heavy rain, incurred an interruption in runway operations.

Details of Cancellations and Diversions

The four cancelled IndiGo flights included 6E 395 from Delhi to Mumbai, 6E 5273 from Mumbai to Indore, 6E 552 from Indore back to Mumbai, and 6E 6613 from Mumbai to Delhi. IndiGo acknowledged the impact of the poor weather in a post on X, advising customers to stay updated regarding their flight statuses. However, the airline did not provide specifics regarding the cancellations.

According to sources in Air Traffic Control, Mumbai International Airport typically manages between nine hundred and one thousand flights on a daily basis, averaging forty-eight air traffic movements per hour, which consists of twenty-four arrivals and twenty-four departures. The weather had a momentary impact on these operations, encompassing both cancellations and diversions.

After an hour, normal runway operations resumed as the weather improved. The airport operator placed an emphasis on the importance of passenger safety, indicating that the temporary suspension of runway operations was a procedural measure to ensure the safety of passengers, aircraft, and ground staff.

Passenger Experience During Disruptions

As a result of the disruptions, many passengers faced considerable inconvenience due to the prolonged delays. With a significant number of flights experiencing operational setbacks, the situation demanded immediate attention from airport authorities and airline operators. Multiple passengers reported being stranded or facing difficulties in managing their travel plans due to the unexpected interruptions.

Officials advised passengers to remain patient as conditions were monitored and updated information was disseminated throughout the airport facility. Communication from the airlines stressed the need for travellers to keep abreast of their flight statuses, which were subject to change based on weather conditions.

Authorities at the airport are expected to continue monitoring weather developments closely to mitigate potential impacts on flight operations in the future. They have also reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all passengers and personnel at the airport during adverse weather situations.
