Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawade Rejects BMC Report on Tree Collapse, Seeks Action in Student’s Death

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Mayor of Mumbai, Ritu Tawade, has publicly dismissed the inquiry report from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) regarding the tree collapse incident on June 30, 2026. This incident resulted in the tragic death of 11-year-old Vihaan Srivastava. Tawade has expressed that the report does not adequately establish accountability for the events leading to this tragedy.

Vihaan was among 13 students from the Universal School in Tilak Nagar, who were travelling on a school bus at the time of the accident. The tree fell around 2.50 pm in Chembur, causing severe injuries to five other children. The timely actions of the bus conductor and local residents helped rescue the injured students from the wreckage.

The report was generated by a three-member inquiry committee, which cleared the Roads and Gardens departments of the BMC of any wrongdoing. Instead, it recommended penalties amounting to Rs 5 lakh for the contractor and Rs 2 lakh for the consultant involved in the stormwater drain projects conducted near the site of the accident.

Calls for Accountability

Mayor Tawade firmly stated her disagreement with the committee’s findings, asserting that merely imposing fines on private organisations does not equate to accountability. She emphasised that the responsibility lies with the Mumbai Municipal Corporation, particularly the site engineers and the Gardens Department, who should have executed their duties in a coordinated manner. Additionally, she highlighted that her observations during a site visit indicated that the trees appeared weakened.

Tawade further asserted that placing a monetary penalty of Rs 7 lakh does not deliver justice for the boy who lost his life. These comments have attracted widespread attention, reflecting the ongoing discussion regarding the need for stringent accountability measures.

In a supporting context, Ameet Satam, the President of BJP Mumbai, also voiced criticism regarding the report and shared a news article on social media questioning who was responsible for Vihaan’s death. His remarks were indicative of the growing concerns around public safety and infrastructure management.

New Initiatives and Future Actions

In response to these events, BMC House Leader Ganesh Khankar has stated that the penalties recommended are insufficient and that the ruling alliance intends to pursue a fresh inquiry into the matter. This reflects a wider sentiment within the municipal body that the issue requires further examination and accountability.

Robert Fernandes, a horticulture and landscape consultant who served on the inquiry panel, distanced himself from the financial penalties proposed, clarifying that the issue of fines was not part of their discussions. He reaffirmed that no compensation could replace the loss of a child’s life, highlighting the profound impact of such tragedies on families and communities.

Additionally, Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule announced that the state government would implement health audits for roadside trees using advanced technology. This initiative aims to evaluate the structural integrity, root systems, and overall lifespan of trees, thereby enhancing safety measures in future infrastructure projects and decreasing the likelihood of similar accidents.

Support for the Mayor’s stance has also come from Kishori Pednekar, Leader of the Opposition in the BMC and a member of the Shiv Sena (UBT). Pednekar has urged Tawade to take further action to establish accountability, assuring support from the opposition if she moves forward with these efforts. This bipartisan concern underscores the urgency surrounding urban safety and effective governance in the city.
