Mumbai: Over 1,700 Tree Fall Complaints Due to Rain Since July 1, Three Deaths Reported

The CSR Journal Magazine

Mumbai has encountered over 1,700 reports of trees and branches falling due to heavy rain since July 1, with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) noting a significant increase compared to previous years. As of 8 am on Thursday, the BMC’s daily monsoon report indicated that 1,711 incidents had occurred across the city, up from 855 in 2025. The heavy rainfall and strong winds have resulted in considerable challenges during the monsoon season.

Among the reported incidents, three fatalities have been confirmed, including that of an 11-year-old pupil who tragically lost his life when a peepal tree collapsed onto a moving school bus in suburban Chembur on June 30. The combination of rainfall and strong gusts has led to widespread disruptions in traffic and damage to vehicles and property, emphasising the severity of conditions this season.

According to BMC data, the distribution of tree fall incidents includes 693 in the western suburbs, 510 in the island city, and 508 in the eastern suburbs. This geographical spread highlights the widespread nature of the tree and branch fall phenomenon within Mumbai, particularly during adverse weather conditions.

Daily Incident Counts and Weather Patterns

This monsoon season has seen a remarkable number of tree falls, with the most significant single-day tally occurring on July 5, when 523 incidents were reported throughout the city. On the following day, July 6, 428 additional incidents were recorded. Both days experienced heavy rainfall alongside wind gusts reaching up to 90 kmph, signalling the perilous weather patterns affecting the city.

The BMC’s record indicates that tree and branch falls have been escalating in recent years. In 2023, a total of 687 incidents were reported, with 180 on BMC land and 507 on private property. Following that, the incidents decreased slightly to 653 in 2024 before rising again to 855 in 2025, suggesting a troubling trend as the city continuously grapples with heavy rains each year.

Detailed data from the BMC shows the daily breakdown of incidents: 90 on July 1, 121 on July 2, 91 on July 3, 164 on July 4, 523 on July 5, and 428 on July 6. A total of 168 incidents were recorded on July 7, with 126 additional incidents reported by 8 am on July 9. This progressive rise in incidents reflects mounting concerns about infrastructure and public safety as the city endures prolonged monsoon conditions.

Fatalities Linked to Tree Falls

Alongside material damages, the human toll of these incidents cannot be overlooked. On July 4, an 18-year-old named Kumar Hasan Raza Jahangir Alam Syed tragically died after a tree branch fell on him while he was riding a motorcycle with friends in Aarey Colony amidst heavy rain. Additionally, a 63-year-old man named Yunus Kundawala succumbed to injuries inflicted by a tree that fell on a shop in Kurla West on July 5.

These incidents serve as a stark reminder of the potential hazards posed by severe weather conditions in urban areas. The ongoing rise in tree fall complaints this monsoon accentuates the need for proactive measures to ensure public safety and mitigate damage, especially as Mumbai continues to face the challenges associated with its monsoon season.

Overall, the BMC’s data underscores a pressing issue in Mumbai—an alarming increase in tree and branch fall complaints, with the highest daily totals seen on July 5 and 6, resulting in significant disruption, property damage, and three reported deaths.
