Heatwave Affects Several Regions in India; Temperatures Expected to Exceed 40°C

The CSR Journal Magazine

A persistent heatwave is impacting multiple areas in western and central India, with temperatures already surpassing 40°C in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has alerted citizens about the likelihood of severe heat conditions extending across various states in the forthcoming days. According to the IMD, significant heatwave activity is anticipated in the Gujarat region on March 11, with further expectations of notable heatwave conditions across Saurashtra and Kutch on March 11 and 12. Isolated pockets in Gujarat may continue to experience heatwave conditions until March 13.

Impact on Daily Life and Weather Precautions

The intense heat is notably being felt in Maharashtra’s Vidarbha area, where temperatures have consistently exceeded 40°C. Residents have reported discomfort due to high temperatures, strong sunlight, and hot winds, particularly during afternoon hours. A meteorologist at the Nagpur centre of the IMD, Praveen Kumar, stated that temperatures may increase further in the coming days. He emphasized that the combination of harsh sunlight and hot winds has been contributing to fatigue among residents.

Warnings of Warm Night Conditions

The IMD has also issued warnings regarding warm night conditions, which pose increased health risks as temperatures remain elevated even after sunset. In addition to the extreme heat, coastal areas are expected to experience hot and humid weather. On March 11, the Konkan region is projected to face humidity, while the coastal regions of Gujarat, Kerala, and Mahe may similarly experience humid conditions from March 11 to March 13. Coastal Karnataka is also likely to witness similar weather patterns on March 11 and 12.

Temperature Trends Across Various Regions

While western India grapples with rising temperatures, the IMD anticipates a gradual decline in temperatures in several regions later in the week. The Western Himalayan region is expected to see maximum temperatures drop by 4-6°C over the next seven days, while plains in northwest India may experience a decrease of 2-4°C within the next 24 hours. Central India might face little change in temperatures for the next three days, followed by a decrease of 3-5°C in subsequent days.

Forecast for Eastern and Northeastern India

In eastern India, temperatures are expected to rise slightly by 2-3°C in the upcoming days before trending downwards again. Northeastern states may also see a drop in temperatures ranging from 3-4°C later in the week. Despite the anticipated cooling trend, meteorologists caution that strong sunshine and dry winds may continue to cause localized heatwave conditions, particularly in western parts of the country, as the summer season progresses.
