CID Arrests Abhishek Banerjee’s Personal Assistant Sumit Roy Following Supreme Court Ruling

Sumit Roy, personal assistant to Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee, was taken into custody by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Thursday afternoon following a dramatic sequence of events sparked by a Supreme Court ruling.

Roy had been evading law enforcement for an extended period, facing multiple serious allegations including land corruption in Salboni and Debra, as well as job-for-bribe scams. A lookout notice had previously been issued against him, prompting state police and the Special Task Force (STF) to conduct midnight raids at several locations, including Banerjee’s Kalighat residence, Roy’s Behala home, and his father-in-law’s residence in Srirampur.

Seeking legal protection while remaining in hiding, Roy had previously approached the apex court for anticipatory bail and briefly secured interim relief.

However, during Thursday’s proceedings, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta argued before the Supreme Court that Roy was uncooperative with investigators. The state also accused him of orchestrating massive financial transactions through his bank accounts and deliberately altering the English spelling of his surname (switching between ROY and RAY) to mislead authorities.

The Supreme Court ultimately rejected Roy’s anticipatory bail petition. The legal green light was given by the court at approximately 12:30 PM. Moving swiftly, CID and STF units arrived at Abhishek Banerjee’s Kalighat residence within an hour.

Upon arrival, officers called out to individuals inside the locked premises. The gates were opened shortly thereafter, leading to Roy being spotted at 1:20 PM and formally placed under arrest by 1:30 PM.
