UK Records Hottest Summer Since 1884

Summer 2026 has been officially recognised as the warmest summer in the United Kingdom since records commenced in 1884, based on recent data from the Met Office. The average temperature recorded during the June to August period was 16.5 degrees Celsius, surpassing the previous high of 16.1 degrees Celsius set in the preceding year.

According to the Met Office, the likelihood of such high temperatures has increased approximately 130-fold due to human-induced climate change. The summer months consistently experienced elevated temperatures, following a record-breaking heatwave that occurred at the end of May.

Dr Amy Doherty, head of the National Climate Information Centre at the Met Office, stated that the conditions observed this summer have shattered UK climate records. She underscored the growing frequency of such events, which reflects the significant impact of climate change on temperatures in the UK.

Remarkable Changes in Historical Temperature Rankings

This summer’s statistics have relegated the infamous summer of 1976 to seventh place in terms of average summer mean temperatures. The top five warmest summers have all taken place since 2003, indicating a recent trend of increasing temperatures.

The Met Office highlighted that the UK commenced meteorological summer with the second warmest June on record, quickly followed by the second warmest July. Although unsettled weather in late August helped to lower monthly temperature averages, the overall consistency of warmth throughout the season has led to a provisional new record for UK summer mean temperatures.

In addition, when evaluating only average daytime maximum temperatures for summer, the 2026 summer emerged as the warmest on record, outperforming the record set in 1976. Daily highs peaked at 38.1 degrees Celsius at Kew Gardens on August 13, with 54 Met Office weather stations reporting their highest daily maximum temperature this summer.

Implications of Human-Induced Climate Change

Dr Mark McCarthy, head of climate attribution at the Met Office, commented on the exceptional nature of the summer of 2026, noting that it is indicative of the extreme weather events that are likely to become more common due to climate change. His analysis suggests that summers like this one have become approximately 130 times more likely as a result of human activities.

If the climate had remained unaffected by human greenhouse gas emissions, a summer of this nature would be exceedingly rare, estimated at a frequency of once in over 1,000 years. In contrast, under current conditions influenced by fossil fuel combustion, such summers may occur around once every nine years.

The Met Office recently conducted a rapid climate attribution study at the end of summer 2025, which warned of the possibility of even hotter summers in the near future. By 2026, the average temperature for the season had risen by 0.40 degrees Celsius compared to 2025, a substantial shift for a seasonal average.

Dr James Pope, a climate scientist at the Met Office, indicated that recent temperatures align with climate projections for a significantly warmer world. He pointed out that summer 2026’s temperatures would be typical for a UK summer in a future characterised by a 2.5 to 3 degrees Celsius increase from pre-industrial levels. He stated that unless greenhouse gas emissions are reduced effectively, summers are projected to continue becoming hotter and drier.
