A devastating fire erupted on a Liberia-flagged cargo vessel undergoing repairs at a shipyard in Qingdao, China, leading to the deaths of at least 25 individuals. The incident occurred around 11.15 am, as reported by state media, when the ship was situated at the facilities of China State Shipbuilding Corporation Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. At the time, there were 42 personnel present aboard the vessel.

Emergency services acted quickly to evacuate 12 people from the ship, while five injured individuals were transported to a medical facility where they are reportedly in a stable condition. The response teams included emergency management, fire and rescue units, police, and medical staff, who swiftly mobilised to conduct search and rescue operations.

Rescue efforts conducted by workers reportedly located all 25 individuals who had been missing following the fire. Unfortunately, none were found alive, according to updates from local authorities. The situation prompted widespread concern, and Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasised the need for thorough search and rescue operations.

He instructed relevant authorities to offer support to those affected and to urgently investigate the cause of the incident. President Xi has called for local governments to learn from this tragedy, urging them to identify fire hazards and improve preventive measures. His directives also included holding responsible parties accountable for the accident to ensure similar events do not recur in the future.

In a coordinated response, Premier Li Qiang has requested comprehensive medical care for the injured victims and careful management of follow-up operations. He noted the necessity of monitoring and mitigating any potential secondary disasters as part of the ongoing response. Additionally, he directed the State Council to utilise this incident as a cautionary lesson for enhancing safety protocols across various sectors.

Investigation and Future Safety Measures

A working group from the Ministry of Emergency Management has been dispatched to the site to oversee the rescue and investigation efforts, ensuring that appropriate measures are taken in light of the incident. Authorities in Shandong Province have mobilised resources to support on-the-ground operations, aiming to manage the situation effectively and maintain public safety.

The shipyard, Qingdao Beihai, is a significant facility under the China State Shipbuilding Corporation, specialising in commercial shipbuilding, repair, and offshore engineering. The yard occupies a vast area of 330 hectares along a 9 km stretch of coastline. As reported by MarineTraffic, the vessel involved was identified as the Ocean Melody, which was moored in Qingdao at the time of the incident.
