Thousands of illuminated drones lit up New York Harbor on Wednesday night in a tribute to the 2,977 people killed in the September 11 terror attacks, forming an aerial artwork that recreated the Twin Towers at their full architectural scale.

The display, titled “2,977 Lights Over New York Harbor”, was unveiled ahead of Friday’s 25th anniversary observance and brought together members of the September 11 community, including survivors, victims’ families and first responders.

Thousands Of Lights Rise Over New York Harbor

The free public art installation saw thousands of drones rise above the harbour, their lights moving across the night sky before gradually coming together to form the outline of the Twin Towers.

According to ABC7, the installation was conceived as a tribute centred on remembrance, reflection and unity ahead of the anniversary commemorations.

The aerial display served as a visual reminder of the scale of the September 11 attacks and their lasting impact on New York City and communities beyond the United States.

Survivors And Families Help Shape Tribute

The project was developed in collaboration with people directly connected to the September 11 attacks, with organisers drawing on their experiences and perspectives while shaping the artwork.

Those involved included Brenda Berkman, an FDNY first responder and artist, and Tim Brown, who served as an FDNY first responder in both 1993 and 2001.

Terry Strada, president of 911 Families United and the widow of Tom Strada, also contributed to the project.

Other members of the September 11 community involved in the tribute included Jim Smith, whose wife, NYPD Officer Moira Smith, was killed in the attacks, and Genevieve Siller, the daughter of Stephen Siller.

Tribute Marks 25 Years Since September 11

As the lights assembled in the night sky to recreate the Twin Towers, the installation brought together art and remembrance while reflecting the stories of people whose lives were directly affected by the attacks.

The drone display formed part of events marking 25 years since September 11, as New York and other communities prepare to commemorate those killed in the attacks and reflect on their enduring legacy.
