The Election Commission of India (ECI) has included the names of Nandan Nilekani, the co-founder of Infosys, and his family in its discrepancy list during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Karnataka. The list flags individuals whose voter registrations are not in alignment with previous electoral rolls. Nilekani, aged 71, alongside his wife Rohini, 67, and their children Janhvi, 38, and Nihar, 36, may soon receive notices as part of the verification process.

These individuals have been designated as “Unmapped with last SIR”, indicating their names were not located in the electoral rolls of 2002. This status could necessitate further verification to affirm their eligibility for voting in the upcoming elections.

Voting Information and Document Requirements

The Nilekani family is recorded in the draft electoral roll for the BTM Layout constituency, where they cast their votes at the Reddy Janasangha High School situated in the Third Block of Koramangala. To confirm their registration, they will be required to provide one of the eleven accepted documents by the ECI, which include forms of identity and proof of residency. The final electoral roll is scheduled for publication on October 27, 2023.

Nandan Nilekani had previously contested the Lok Sabha election in 2014 from the Bangalore South constituency but was unsuccessful, losing to BJP leader Ananth Kumar by a margin of 2.28 lakh votes. In addition to his political aspirations, Nilekani played a significant role as the founding chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India, which is responsible for the implementation of Aadhaar.

Among others listed in the discrepancy report are prominent figures such as distinguished scientist and Bharat Ratna awardee Prof CNR Rao, along with Padma Shri recipient Harekala Hajabba. Prof Rao’s name has drawn attention due to a mismatch with the 2002 electoral rolls, but according to Maheshwar Rao, the Bengaluru Urban District Election Officer, no notice has been dispatched to Rao as his booth-level officer has recommended his inclusion in the final electoral roll.

The discrepancy list is extensive, reporting issues affecting 43.81 lakh individuals out of 4.46 crore voters in the draft roll. This extensive review aims to ensure the integrity and accuracy of the electoral process ahead of upcoming elections. Individuals listed must submit the necessary documentation to their respective Booth Level Officers by October 22, 2023, to clarify their voting eligibility.
