Sudivya Kumar Sonu, the minister of Jharkhand, tragically passed away at the age of 56 in Giridih on September 6. His sudden demise has led the state government to declare two days of mourning, with Chief Minister Hemant Soren reflecting on Sonu as not just a colleague but an elder brother. This loss resonates deeply not only on a political level but also on a personal one, as he was a husband and a father.

The critical events unfolded between midnight and four in the early hours of that day, starting at Sonu’s residence before transitioning to a private hospital. Sonu, who served as a two-term Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) MLA for the Giridih Sadar constituency, was elected first in 2019 and again in 2024. Within the cabinet led by Soren, his responsibilities encompassed multiple portfolios, including those of higher and technical education, urban development and housing, tourism, art and culture, and sports and youth affairs. Recently, he had been instrumental in negotiating with students protesting in Ranchi and had led a delegation to Karnataka to evaluate tourism infrastructure.

At approximately midnight, Sonu experienced chest pain, which his family urged him to get checked at the hospital. However, he suspected that the pain might be due to gas or acidity and chose to wait. Unfortunately, the pain intensified, prompting a visit to Mercy Hospital around 2.15 am, during which he reportedly vomited. Dr Shahzad Sheikh, who attended to him, noted that by the time Sonu reached the hospital, he had already aspirated.

Upon examination, an ECG revealed indications of a heart attack. Nevertheless, despite the medical team’s prompt intervention, Sonu’s condition deteriorated, leading to his declaration of death by approximately 4 am. This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the urgency often needed in cases of heart-related illnesses.

Medical professionals emphasise that a heart attack is an urgent situation where time is crucial. Delays in seeking help significantly increase the risk of irreversible harm. Common household beliefs often misinterpret chest pain as digestive issues or stress, which can exacerbate the situation. Recognising warning signs—such as pressure or pain in the chest, radiating discomfort, or accompanying symptoms like sweating and nausea—is vital for effective treatment.

Although Sonu was not a typical patient, as he had access to medical resources and family support, the instinct to “wait and see” regarding his health ultimately compromised a timely response.
