Gujarat Government To Establish Rs 105 Crore Hostel Complex Following Air India Crash

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Gujarat government is set to rebuild a hostel complex and canteen block at the site of the Air India plane crash, as disclosed by Gujarat Health Minister Praful Pansheriya. Tata Group, the owner of Air India, will reportedly contribute Rs 53.12 crore to the Health Department to address the damage incurred at the ‘Atulyam 1 to 4 Blocks’ located in the New Mental Campus near Civil Hospital, Asarwa. This decision comes in light of the crash that took place on June 12, 2025, in Meghaninagar, which resulted in significant destruction to various facilities managed by the Health Department.

At the time of the incident, there were 92 students living in the hostel. Following a structural audit, these buildings were deemed unsafe for occupation, thereby necessitating their demolition. In response, the Gujarat government has prioritised the creation of new student accommodation, ensuring continuous support for the affected students.

New Infrastructure Development Plans Announced

Minister Pansheriya outlined plans for a modern hostel aimed at married postgraduate doctors, with a construction estimated at Rs 105 crore. This facility will be situated within the New Mental Campus, close to the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance medical education in the region, aiming to introduce 48 new super-speciality seats for postgraduate courses over the next three years.

The newly proposed hostel will accommodate a total of 236 super-speciality PG doctors, which includes 144 students. The project will also incorporate the construction of a contemporary canteen block and a new electrical sub-station to support these facilities. A substantial area of land has been allocated by the State Government for this purpose.

To facilitate the swift implementation of this project, a budget provision of Rs 34.65 crore has already been sanctioned from an estimated Rs 51.84 crore earmarked for the 2026-27 financial year. This allocation demonstrates the government’s commitment to bolstering infrastructure within the health sector and ensuring the welfare of medical students.

Design and Amenities of the Proposed Hostel Complex

The forthcoming ‘Atulyam 1 to 7’ PG hostels will feature a Ground plus eight floors (G+8) design, equipped with advanced amenities tailored to the needs of married super-speciality postgraduate students. Each residential unit in the complex will be structured as a studio apartment, comprising a living space, an attached kitchen, a bedroom, and a bathroom facility to ensure comfort and convenience.

Additionally, the plans include essential security features and utility systems, such as a fire-fighting setup, a Reverse Osmosis (RO) water purification plant, and a reliable drainage system. A spacious basement will be designated for parking, while separate accommodation will be available for unmarried PG students. The complex will also offer a modern mess facility, a gymnasium, and a recreation room for students’ well-being.

The overall design of the hostel complex aims to create an aesthetically pleasing environment, benefiting the living experience of the students. The Gujarat Government affirms its dedication to improving educational infrastructure as part of a larger initiative to enhance facilities within the health sector in the region.
