Gujarat: 50-60 Hospitalised After Suspected Food Poisoning at Dahod wedding

The CSR Journal Magazine

A major health crisis unfolded in Dahod, Gujarat, where approximately 50 to 60 individuals have been admitted to Zydus Hospital due to suspected food poisoning. The incident took place following a wedding ceremony attended by an estimated 300 to 400 guests on the evening of April 21. Symptoms including vomiting and diarrhoea began manifesting around 11 pm, prompting immediate medical attention.

Dr Rajiv Damor, the Resident Medical Officer at Zydus Hospital, confirmed that the hospital was notified in advance about the number of individuals expected for treatment. Preparations were made to accommodate the anticipated flow of patients. Currently, all admitted individuals are reported to be in stable condition and receiving necessary care.

The situation has raised alarms regarding food safety practices during large events, with health officials likely to conduct further investigations into the source of the food contamination. Local authorities are monitoring the situation closely, and additional health measures may be employed to prevent such occurrences in the future.

Parallel Incident of Food Poisoning in Odisha Raises Concerns

In a separate yet related matter, a high-level inquiry was initiated following the tragic death of a twelve-year-old student in Odisha, reportedly due to food poisoning. The student, identified as Rupali Besra, was attending the Kakabandha Ashram School hostel when she fell ill. The Revenue Divisional Commissioner, Sudhansu Mohan Samal, visited the site to evaluate the circumstances surrounding her death.

The inquiry will involve discussions with various stakeholders, such as students, staff, and medical personnel, to ascertain the cause of the incident and prevent future cases. Local unrest escalated during Rupali’s funeral procession, with villagers expressing their demands for justice, leading to clashes with police as tensions ran high over the management of the situation.

Reports indicate that approximately 150 individuals also fell ill in connection with this incident, with some requiring critical medical care. The district administration has announced compensation of Rs 7 lakh to Rupali’s family, alongside an additional Rs 3 lakh announced by the Chief Minister, yet local residents deem it insufficient.

Authorities Respond to Community Demands for Justice

Demands for accountability have intensified within the community, urging visits from the Odisha Health Minister and calls for enhanced compensation following these health-related crises. Opposition parties, alongside local activists, staged protests seeking legal action against those responsible for the food safety lapses. Many are advocating for Rs 50 lakh compensation and improved medical care for those affected.

In response to the pressing demands, the district administration acknowledged its shortcomings in handling food safety regulations. Authorities have committed to investigating the matter thoroughly and enforcing strict penalties against any personnel found negligent in their duties regarding food handling.

The Karanjia Sub-Collector, Dayasindhu Parida, confirmed that necessary steps will be taken to ensure such an incident does not recur. The focus will be on investigating the events leading to the illnesses and taking corrective measures across local school food programmes to abolish unsafe food practices in educational institutions.

Authorities remain vigilant, maintaining a strong presence in affected areas to prevent further disturbances while ensuring that the health and safety of residents are prioritised. The deceased student’s family and those affected in the Dahod incident will receive ongoing support as the inquiries continue.
