The isolation of multiple valleys in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) continues for the fourth day, following accelerated glacier melting and significant flash floods due to unusually high temperatures. Thousands of residents and tourists are reportedly stranded, as relief efforts are hampered by the situation. Increased occurrences of glacial lake outburst floods (Glofs) have further exacerbated the difficulties faced in the region, according to local reports.

Blocked Routes and Ongoing Relief Efforts

While key routes such as the Karakoram Highway (KKH) and the Gilgit-Shandur Road have been reopened, other vital roads remain obstructed. Essential routes including the Baltistan Road, Astore Valley Road, Naltar Highway, and Hisper Road have been significantly affected by mudflows, high water levels, and road collapses. Local disaster management authorities are working diligently to clear these blockages and restore supply lines despite adverse conditions.

Ataur Rehman Kakar, Director General of the GB Disaster Management Authority (GBDMA), stated that heavy machinery has been working around the clock to handle the situation. “Between July 18 and July 21, GB experienced unprecedented temperatures, which resulted in extensive glacier melting and Glof incidents,” he reported. The agency has begun distributing critical supplies, including food, tents, and medicines, to those displaced by the floods.

High water levels and mudflows have substantially complicated road restoration efforts. Major obstruction points have been reported on the Baltistan Road near Ansar Bridge, with additional traffic halts observed in the Haramosh area. These challenges have placed a considerable strain on relief operations.

Rescue Operations and Community Support

In response to the growing isolation of remote areas, GB Chief Minister Amjad Hussain has instructed officials to initiate helicopter rescue and relief operations where road access is entirely disrupted. During a high-level meeting, he mandated the establishment of an alternate light-vehicle route to Baltistan within two days and emphasised the need for a continuous supply of food and commodities across affected districts.

Despite some progress on main highways, local communities in the regions of Astore, Diamer, Ghizer, and Nagar are facing severe shortages of essential resources, including drinking water, electricity, and food. Damage to the fibre-optic infrastructure has led to disruptions in mobile and internet connectivity in numerous areas, compounding the challenges for residents.

Residents in Nagar district’s Hisper Valley have reportedly been isolated for nearly two months due to ongoing Glof incidents. A recent flood on July 22 resulted in the loss of an additional 300 feet of road at Apiharai and 800 feet at Bayo Khai. Currently, a temporary pedestrian track along the river serves as the sole route for locals to transport medicines and supplies while awaiting improved conditions for more intensive road reconstruction efforts.

Weather Warnings and Continued Risks

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued warnings for continued rain, thunderstorms, and heavy showers in isolated locations through July 28, raising concerns about further landslides and additional Glof events in the vulnerable valleys. Situation reports from GBDMA indicate that while conditions are gradually stabilising in some districts, key choke points on roads such as Haramosh, Naltar, Hisper, and various sections in Astore Valley and Hushe Valley are expected to remain closed until weather conditions allow for comprehensive protective engineering works.

Earlier reports indicated that at least 37 individuals have lost their lives in rain-related incidents during the ongoing monsoon season. The extreme weather has triggered flash floods and landslides, resulting in damage to homes, crops, livestock, and infrastructure across regions including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Punjab.
