Gitanjali Angmo, the wife of prominent educator Sonam Wangchuk, has voiced her concerns regarding the portrayal of student protests occurring at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. On July 23, Angmo urged that reports linking the ongoing demonstrations to acts of violence should be substantiated with credible evidence. She emphasised that the protests have been conducted in a peaceful manner.

In a message shared on the platform X, Angmo expressed her distress over the negative representation of students in the media. She stated, “As an educator, I find it deeply painful to watch the image of our students being tarnished in the media.” This statement reflects her deep-rooted belief in the merits of the students’ cause and their right to peaceful protest.

Angmo additionally highlighted that observers of the protests have noted the students’ remarkable restraint and discipline. She questioned the system’s readiness to suspect students, suggesting a lack of trust that ought to be addressed. “If there are reports of violence elsewhere in Delhi, please do not rush to attribute them to this movement without evidence,” she added.

Continuing her appeal, Angmo stressed the necessity of protecting students’ dignity and reputation. She stated, “Our children deserve to be protected, not portrayed as villains. Their voices deserve to be heard, not drowned out by narratives that serve vested interests.” This call for respect and recognition of student voices underscores the need for constructive dialogue regarding their grievances.

In a related development, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has expressed its support for the protests, specifically in connection with the NEET examination leak. Meanwhile, it condemned recent instances of violence during protests at Jantar Mantar. The organisation stressed the necessity of addressing students’ legitimate grievances through constructive dialogue and institutional reform.

The ABVP’s statement on July 22 mentioned their solidarity with students who faced disruptions during the protests, expressing sympathy for the injured among both students and security personnel. The organisation’s swift condemnation of violence demonstrates its commitment to maintaining a peaceful dialogue in the face of tensions stemming from educational issues.

Further, ABVP stated that student-related issues should not be manipulated for political gain. The group has consistently advocated for accountability concerning alleged discrepancies in competitive exams, including NEET-UG. They have previously demanded a probe by a central agency and have mobilised for change outside the headquarters of the National Testing Agency (NTA).
