The Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) in Kanpur has taken decisive action against momo manufacturing and vending units, resulting in the closure of three establishments due to serious hygiene violations. This operation was conducted on July 13, 2026, following directives from District Magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh.
Inspections Reveal Serious Lapses
During the enforcement drive, food safety officials inspected three local momo shops: Akash Momos in Keshav Nagar, Shri Balaji Momos in Rawatpur, and another unit in Saket Nagar. Inspectors observed considerable lapses in cleanliness and hygiene across all three locations. The investigation uncovered that the chutney served with the momos was allegedly stored under unsanitary conditions.
The inspections led to the collection of samples from both the chutney and the momos for laboratory analysis. Reports indicated that the conditions found at Shri Balaji Momos were particularly concerning, as the manufacturing unit lacked the necessary food business registration. Officials noted that the premises were unhygienic and subsequently destroyed approximately 45 kilograms of chutney at the site.
Authorities mandated that the unit remain closed until compliance with registration requirements is achieved and all hygiene deficiencies are corrected. The operation highlighted a broader concern regarding food safety standards in the area.
Destruction of Stale Chutney and Other Food Items
The enforcement drive extended to momo carts situated in Maswanpur, where officials found colourful finger chips and chutney that did not meet hygiene standards. These items were also destroyed in accordance with safety regulations. The total amount of chutney disposed of during the operation reached approximately 115 kilograms.
District Magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh emphasised the administration’s commitment to upholding food quality and hygiene. He confirmed that all collected samples have been sent for rigorous laboratory testing, and should any violations be confirmed by the test results, strict action will be taken against the operators under the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006.
This initiative represents the FSDA’s ongoing efforts to ensure compliance with food safety regulations and maintain public health standards. The latest enforcement action serves as a warning to all food vendors to adhere to hygiene practices to prevent potential public health risks.
