Kerala has confirmed the tragic death of a four-year-old girl named Nila, a resident of Kozhikode, due to a Shigella infection. In addition to this fatality, two other children in the state have tested positive for the same disease. The health authorities have mobilised to implement enhanced surveillance and preventive measures across the region.
A ten-year-old child affected by the infection has since been discharged from the hospital, while the two-year-old’s condition is reported to be stable. These developments have raised concerns among health officials and necessitated immediate action to control the situation.
Authorities Implement Preventive Measures
K. Siddique, the state agriculture minister and MLA representing Kalpetta, announced that a high-level meeting would take place on Tuesday to assess the ongoing situation and evaluate prevention strategies. He indicated that precautionary advisories have been issued to individuals who may have been in contact with the infected children.
Shigella, which is a bacterial infection affecting the digestive system, is primarily transmitted through contaminated food and water sources. Siddique emphasised the highly contagious nature of the infection, which can impact individuals of all ages, though it tends to be most severe in children.
Health Minister K. Muraleedharan is expected to visit the affected district on Tuesday to review the ground realities. He noted that 25 students are currently receiving treatment at Sultan Bathery Taluk Hospital, but none are in critical condition. A medical team has also been dispatched from Kozhikode to support local health officials.
