Five Die in Plane Crash While Heading to Pickleball Tournament in Texas

The CSR Journal Magazine

A small aircraft carrying pickleball players crashed in the Texas Hill Country, resulting in the fatalities of all five individuals on board. This tragic incident occurred around 11 pm on Thursday, 1 May 2026, in Wimberley, located approximately 40 miles (64 kilometres) southwest of Austin, as confirmed by the Texas Department of Public Safety. Authorities reported that the pilot and four passengers were pronounced dead at the scene.

Details of the Flight

The aircraft, identified as a Cessna 421C, had taken off from Amarillo and was en route to New Braunfels National Airport. The flight path indicates that the passengers were heading to a tournament at the Cranky Pickle in New Braunfels, which is situated about 30 miles (48 kilometres) northeast of San Antonio. Eyewitness accounts describe the plane crashing amidst trees, with aerial images revealing the extent of the destruction.

Individuals in the area reported a loud crash, with one nearby resident, Stacey Rohr, stating she felt the vibrations from the incident while in her home. She described the moment as so close that she feared it was her own property that was on fire, prompting her to immediately contact her landlord.

Reports from the Amarillo Pickleball Club confirmed that the victims were members travelling for the tournament. Although their names have not yet been released, the community is reportedly grief-stricken, with plans to honour the deceased players before resuming the tournament, as noted by Martin Robertson, the head pro at the Cranky Pickle.

Community Reactions

In a parallel incident, a second plane also departed from Amarillo for the same tournament and successfully landed in New Braunfels. The pilot of that aircraft expressed concern for the first plane after noticing its erratic movements during transit, according to air traffic control communications.

At least one pilot in the vicinity confirmed that the aircraft in trouble had activated its emergency locator device prior to the crash. As a precaution, the air traffic control swiftly notified emergency services to respond.

Weather Conditions at the Time

Weather reports from the National Weather Service indicated that the weather was mostly cloudy in the New Braunfels area before the crash occurred. A significant thunderstorm developed approximately two hours after the incident, although it remains unclear whether weather conditions played a direct role in the accident.

Wimberley, a small town with a population of roughly 3,000, alongside New Braunfels, which has around 116,000 residents, are popular tourist destinations within the Texas Hill Country, drawing visitors for various recreational activities.
