Ex-TMC MLA Named in Court Plea Related to RG Kar Medical College Rape-Murder Case

The CSR Journal Magazine

The parents of the victim of the alleged rape and murder at RG Kar Medical College have approached a Kolkata court, requesting the arrest and custodial interrogation of three individuals. They claim these individuals were instrumental in the prompt cremation of their daughter’s remains, potentially compromising evidence. In a recent application submitted to the Sealdah court, the family specifically identified former Panihati MLA Nirmal Ghosh, Somnath Das, and local Trinamool Congress (TMC) functionary Sanjib Mukhopadhyay.

The complaint asserts that the trio allegedly “hijacked” the victim’s body from RG Kar Medical College and hastily arranged for cremation. This swift action, according to the family, obstructed their right to a second post-mortem examination, with reports suggesting that the necessary documents were not provided to them prior to the cremation taking place.

The family’s legal representative expressed concern in court over the actions of the accused individuals following the tragic incident, emphasising that such conduct warrants their custodial interrogation to assist in the investigation.

Central Bureau of Investigation’s Response

This information comes amidst ongoing legal scrutiny of the RG Kar case. On the same day, a division bench of the Calcutta High Court, led by Justice Rajasekhar Mantha, recused itself from hearing subsequent matters pertaining to the case after the CBI filed a sealed report. Justice Mantha indicated that a state judicial commission is expected to be constituted concerning the case and expressed that there was no pressing need for the current bench to continue presiding over it.

With these developments, the case has now been referred back to the Chief Justice for reassignment to another bench, reflecting the complexities surrounding the investigation and legal proceedings.

Concerns Over Evidence Preservation

In a related development, the Joint Platform of Doctors West Bengal has formally communicated with the state chief secretary, voicing apprehensions about the potential destruction of important files and evidence linked to alleged misconduct within the state health department. The organisation has urged for the immediate preservation of records to ensure the integrity of ongoing investigations.

The concerns revolve around allegations of corruption associated with various healthcare activities, including appointments, procurement practices, and infrastructure projects across the state’s health sector. The group’s demand highlights the need for transparency and accountability in the wake of serious allegations surrounding healthcare governance.

The next hearing for this case has been scheduled for June 5, as developments continue to unfold in relation to the alleged incidents at RG Kar Medical College and the subsequent legal proceedings. Public and media attention remains focused on ensuring justice for the victim and safeguarding evidence critical to the investigation.
