Agnimitra Paul Alleges Conspiracy Behind Police Suspensions in RG Kar Case

Agnimitra Paul, a minister from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has claimed that the suspension of three police officers by the West Bengal government is indicative of a much larger conspiracy stemming from the RG Kar case. This assertion was made after the officers were suspended due to alleged lapses in the investigation surrounding this serious incident. Paul directly implicated former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress government in facilitating a cover-up in connection with the case.

Paul remarked, “I have stated from the beginning that Sanjay Roy was not the only individual involved. The circumstances surrounding this incident suggest a far-reaching conspiracy.” Her comments come in light of the suspension announcement, which she welcomed while calling for justice for the victim.

In her statements, Paul also highlighted concerns about the handling of the victim’s body, questioning why it was cremated so swiftly and why no second autopsy was performed despite a clear need for it. She posited that multiple irregularities occurred during the investigation process, undermining the pursuit of justice.

Claims of Coercion and Larger Implications

Paul further alleged that the family of the victim faced undue pressure from law enforcement, claiming that the police offered financial inducements to keep them silent about the case. “Her father and mother were in the same vehicle when the Deputy Commissioner called and allegedly offered them large sums of money to remain quiet,” she stated. These accusations have intensified scrutiny on the police’s role in the investigation and the connections to political interests.

Additionally, Paul asserted that the murder could not have been the act of one individual alone. She emphasised the need for a thorough investigation, citing the existence of numerous CCTV cameras near the incident site that reportedly captured no evidence. “The nature of this crime, combined with construction work commencing the very next day, raises significant questions about the handling of the case,” she argued.

She called for the reopening of several old cases that may have been compromised by political interference over the years. Paul referenced statements made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari about the need to revisit cases of alleged corruption and violence against women that had been previously disregarded.

Government’s Response and Ongoing Investigation

In response to these developments, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari confirmed that an investigation is underway against senior police officials, including former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal. Adhikari described the handling of the RG Kar case as fundamentally flawed and confirmed that multiple officers were suspended to ensure the integrity of the investigation.

During a recent press briefing, Adhikari also indicated that the West Bengal Police and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) would take over the case to provide unbiased oversight. The Chief Minister underscored the importance of transparency, stating, “All officials who were involved at the time of this case have been suspended to ensure a clear and transparent process moving forward.”

The RG Kar Medical College incident occurred on August 9, 2024, when a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor was discovered deceased in a seminar room on campus. This tragic event has sparked widespread protests, with many citizens demanding accountability and justice for the victim.
