EU and 27 Member States Show Support for India on Pahalgam Terror Attack Anniversary

The CSR Journal Magazine

The European Union (EU) and its 27 member nations have affirmed their solidarity with India as they mark the first anniversary of the Pahalgam terror attack, which resulted in the loss of 26 innocent lives. In a statement posted on X on April 22, the EU in India expressed its commitment to standing alongside the Indian population in remembering the victims. The attack occurred on April 22, 2025, and has left a lasting impact on the nation.

The EU’s statement further conveyed its condolences to the families affected by this tragedy and reiterated support for the Indian government. The organisation underscored its position, stating, “We honour their memory along with their families and the Indian authorities.” It reiterated a firm rejection of terrorism in all its manifestations, asserting that such acts can never be justified.

Details of the Attack and Its Aftermath

The brutal attack in Pahalgam serves as a reminder of the ongoing security challenges faced by the region. Reportedly, the assailants questioned the victims regarding their faith before carrying out the killings, intensifying the grief experienced by the victims’ families even a year later. This incident elicited a nationwide mourning period as officials and civilians alike remembered the shocking events that unfolded in the previously tranquil tourist destination.

Following the attack, India’s armed forces initiated Operation Sindoor on May 7, 2025, targeting terror bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK). Official reports indicated that the operation resulted in the destruction of nine significant terror launchpads associated with various militant groups, including Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed. Additionally, over 100 terrorists were reportedly eliminated during this operation.

The retaliatory measures instigated a series of drone strikes and artillery exchanges from Pakistan, resulting in a four-day military confrontation between the two countries. India maintained robust defensive actions, launching further strikes that targeted radar installations in Lahore and facilities near Gujranwala. Subsequently, after substantial damage, the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) from Pakistan reached out to his Indian counterpart, leading to an agreed ceasefire on May 10, 2025.

Ongoing Security Measures and Strategic Actions

In addition to military responses, India implemented significant non-military measures in the aftermath of the attack. These actions included the termination of the Indus Waters Treaty and the suspension of all bilateral trade with Pakistan. Such steps were characterised as necessary to counter the threats posed by terrorism and to ensure national security.

Last year, India reported success in further operations, including Operation Mahadev, which resulted in the elimination of three terrorists directly connected to the Pahalgam attack. These effective measures reflect a broader commitment to combat terrorism while also addressing the underlying security concerns in the region.

The commemoration of the Pahalgam attack thus stands not only as a memorial to the lives lost but also highlights the ongoing struggles against terrorism and violence that impact both local communities and international relations. As the EU and its member states voice their solidarity, the event serves as a reminder of the global stance against such violent acts.
