The potential for a ceasefire in the ongoing Ukraine conflict was hinted at by US President Donald Trump following a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. During this call, the two leaders discussed various topics, primarily focusing on the situation in Ukraine. Trump’s comments suggest a shift in Moscow’s willingness to negotiate a resolution, citing that Putin may be poised to pause hostilities.

Trump noted, “Putin suggested a little bit of a ceasefire,” indicating that an official announcement from Russia could be forthcoming. The President expressed confidence that a solution could be achieved relatively soon, based on what he interpreted as Putin’s readiness to engage in negotiations.

By asserting that some external factors had complicated Putin’s ability to negotiate earlier, Trump implied that a more conducive atmosphere might now exist for talks. He stated, “I think he’d like to see a solution, I can tell you, and that’s good,” reflecting a belief in an upcoming resolution.

Conversations Surrounding Iran

The dialogue between Trump and Putin also covered the Middle East, particularly concerning Iran’s nuclear programme. In an unexpected diplomatic gesture, Putin reportedly offered to assist the United States with issues related to Iranian nuclear enrichment. However, Trump made it clear that his priority remains concluding the conflict in Ukraine before accepting any help from Russia on other matters.

“Before you help me, I want to end your war,” Trump reiterated, demonstrating his focus on the immediate crisis in Ukraine. He acknowledged Putin’s interest in participating in discussions regarding Iran but insisted that resolving the war was of greater importance.

Furthermore, Trump voiced a stark assessment of Iran’s military capabilities. He claimed that recent operations had substantially hindered Iran’s ability to manufacture and deploy missiles. He provided specific estimates, stating, “We knocked out about 80% of them,” implying that Iran possesses limited missile-making resources remaining.

Ongoing Relations and Future Dialogue

In light of the deteriorating situation in Iran, Trump reaffirmed the US stance against allowing Tehran to possess nuclear weapons. He underscored that while a diplomatic agreement would be preferable, the US is prepared to dismantle any remaining missile facilities if necessary. He indicated, “They know it, and just about everybody else does,” reflecting a firm approach towards Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

Trump indicated that Russia and the United States share a common objective regarding Iran’s nuclear capabilities, with both leaders reportedly agreeing that Iran must not develop a nuclear weapon. The conversations between Trump and Putin signify ongoing efforts to address multiple global security challenges, including the escalating tensions in the Persian Gulf.

Besides discussing Ukraine and Iran, this conversation marked the twelfth interaction between Trump and Putin since he resumed his position as President in early 2025. According to reports from TASS, the conversation lasted about 90 minutes and was deemed “frank and businesslike” by Russian officials. Both leaders have committed to maintaining open channels of communication to tackle the protracted conflict in Ukraine and other issues that jeopardise global stability.
