DK Shivakumar Downplays Karnataka Congress Leadership Tensions

The CSR Journal Magazine

DK Shivakumar, the Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka, has sought to diminish concerns regarding alleged internal strife within the ruling Congress party. He affirmed that there are no conflicts within the organisation, emphasising his commitment to abide by decisions made by the party’s high command. Addressing the media, he stated, “I do not speak about political issues before the media. When the time comes, all of you will know about it.”

His statements come in light of increasing speculation about potential leadership changes and a cabinet reshuffle, as the government approaches the halfway mark of its term. Reports suggest that a power-sharing agreement between Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar was established during the formation of the government in 2023, leading to further discussions about possible shifts in leadership.

Shivakumar responded to remarks made by senior minister Satish Jarkiholi, who hinted at internal party differences requiring leadership intervention. He reiterated his confidence in the party’s leadership, asserting that “the party leadership will do whatever needs to be done at the appropriate time.”

Assurance on Leadership Changes

Concerning questions about a prospective leadership change, Shivakumar reiterated that both he and the Chief Minister would adhere to party directives. He mentioned, “Both the Chief Minister and I have said that whenever the high command gives any instruction, we will follow it and act accordingly.” His comments serve to reinforce a united front amid escalating discussions regarding the party’s future direction.

Despite rampant speculation regarding political developments, he chose not to elaborate on whether any announcements could be expected close to his birthday on May 15. Such statements only add to the ongoing intrigue surrounding the political landscape in Karnataka.

Interestingly, Shivakumar also issued a firm directive to party members, prohibiting the display of flex banners or hoardings for his birthday celebrations. He cautioned that violators would face consequences, including heavy fines and possible legal action. “If anyone puts up flexes or banners on my birthday, I will instruct civic authorities to take action,” he noted, emphasising the importance of maintaining the aesthetic appeal of public spaces.

Support for Shivakumar from Community Leaders

In parallel developments, Pranavananda Swamiji, the president of the forum representing the Most Backward Classes mutts, expressed strong support for DK Shivakumar as a potential candidate for the Chief Minister’s position. He addressed the media, urging the Congress high command to appoint Shivakumar, citing a promise made by senior party officials after he led the party to a significant victory in the state.

While acknowledging the current Chief Minister’s role within the backward classes, Pranavananda Swamiji highlighted that Siddaramaiah has already served as Chief Minister for nearly eight years. He indicated a prevailing sentiment that leaders from other backward communities ought to be considered for leadership opportunities. Failure to recognise this, he warned, could lead to detrimental consequences for the Congress party in Karnataka.

Furthermore, the seer warned of “serious consequences” should a leadership change not materialise, alleging that Shivakumar has been overlooked despite his substantial contributions. He announced plans for around 25 swamijis to travel to New Delhi to urge the Congress high command to consider their demands following a meeting with Shivakumar in Sadashivanagar.
