Dinesh Trivedi Expected to Become India’s Next High Commissioner to Bangladesh

The CSR Journal Magazine

Dinesh Trivedi, a seasoned politician and former Union minister from West Bengal, is reportedly set to be appointed as India’s next High Commissioner to Bangladesh. This information emerged from sources on Sunday, indicating a significant step in India’s diplomatic strategy in the region.

The position of High Commissioner has become available after Pranay Verma, who has been serving in Dhaka since September 2022, was named ambassador to Belgium and the European Union on April 10. This change is part of a broader reorganisation within India’s diplomatic missions.

Trivedi, at seventy-five years of age, has extensive experience in government, having served as the railway minister and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare during the tenure of the United Progressive Alliance. He held positions as both a member of the Rajya Sabha, representing West Bengal, and a Lok Sabha MP from the Barrackpore constituency.

Bilateral Relations in Context

The potential appointment of Trivedi comes amid efforts by New Delhi to re-establish diplomatic relations with Bangladesh, following a significant shift in the political landscape. The new government in Bangladesh, led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, was formed in February 2026 after recent elections.

Relations between India and Bangladesh deteriorated considerably after the interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, took over following the Sheikh Hasina government’s collapse in August 2024. The appointment of a political figure like Trivedi is seen as a move to strengthen ties during this transitional phase.

Sources indicate that Trivedi’s knowledge and experience make him a suitable candidate for the position, but as of now, there has been no official confirmation regarding his appointment. The strategic importance of the role cannot be overstated, especially in the current diplomatic climate.

Recent Diplomatic Engagements

The engagement between India and Bangladesh has seen notable developments recently, including a visit from Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman. Accompanied by the prime minister’s advisor for foreign affairs, Humayun Kabir, Rahman’s recent trip to New Delhi marked a significant occasion as the first high-level visit from the newly established Bangladeshi government.

During discussions held with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, the focus was on the need to foster “constructive” relations with the new administration in Dhaka. This meeting highlighted India’s commitment to enhancing bilateral ties and moving past a period characterised by diplomatic tensions.

Jaishankar and Rahman engaged in comprehensive discussions aimed at identifying pathways for cooperation, aiming to overcome the challenges posed by the previous interim government’s diplomatic orientation, which saw over 18 months of strained relations.

As India prepares for potentially appointing Trivedi, the broader implications of his role in improving bilateral relations between India and Bangladesh will be closely monitored by political analysts and diplomats in both nations.
