Delhi Experiences Monsoon Rain Today with IMD Issuing Yellow Alert

The CSR Journal Magazine

Delhi commenced on Friday, July 3, under overcast skies, providing a refreshing atmosphere with a minimum temperature recorded at 28.1°C. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for moderate rainfall and thunderstorms anticipated throughout the day. This development follows the long-awaited arrival of the southwest monsoon in the capital.

The southwest monsoon is crucial for India, being the primary rainy season that supplies the majority of annual rainfall to northern regions, including Delhi. Notably, this year, the monsoon reached the capital on July 2, which is five days later than the average onset date, marking the first occurrence of a July onset since 2021.

Prior to the monsoon’s arrival, Delhi endured an extensive and harsh summer. The preceding months were characterised by severe heatwave conditions, with daytime temperatures frequently exceeding 44°C. Even in the lead-up to the monsoon, the national capital faced humid conditions that elevated temperatures further. Such extreme heat led to multiple alerts from the IMD regarding the uncomfortably high temperatures.

Impact of the Weather on Daily Life

The excessive heat prompted citizens to minimise outdoor activities, particularly during peak afternoon hours. Nights did not provide much relief, as minimum temperatures remained elevated. This combination of high temperatures and humidity increased health risks, including heatstroke, and also raised electricity demand due to the need for cooling systems.

The awaited arrival of the monsoon provided some immediate relief with initial showers and thunderstorms reported on July 2. Following these conditions, weather stations across Delhi recorded rainfall and a noticeable drop in daytime temperatures, which was welcomed by residents.

With the monsoon in full effect, the forecast predicts that cloudy skies and rain showers will persist, with daytime temperatures expected to hover between 30°C and 32°C. This shift in weather patterns is anticipated to provide respite from the preceding heatwave. However, the yellow alert indicates that moderate rain and thunderstorms could lead to temporary waterlogging in low-lying areas, potentially causing traffic disruptions.

Guidance for Residents Amid Weather Changes

Residents are urged to remain informed about local weather updates and carry appropriate rain gear. Caution is advised while driving on wet roads, particularly as thunderstorms may bring gusty winds varying from 30 km/h to 40 km/h, with isolated instances possibly reaching up to 50 km/h during intense rainfall later in the day.

In the upcoming days, it is likely that Delhi will experience typical monsoon weather for July, characterised by a mixture of clouds and intermittent showers. The IMD continues to monitor weather developments, ensuring the public remains aware of necessary precautions during this season.

This monsoon period may bring both challenges and relief, highlighting the importance of preparedness among residents to navigate the typical fluctuations of rainy weather while also enjoying the relief it provides from high summer temperatures.
