Delhi Experiences Heavy Rainfall, Mayur Vihar Reports Over 10 cm

The CSR Journal Magazine

Delhi has recently experienced its most significant monsoon rainfall to date, beginning early on Thursday morning, July 9. Heavy showers persisted through the night, affecting multiple areas in the national capital. As a result, numerous roads became waterlogged, impeding morning traffic and hindering the usual movement of residents in Delhi-NCR.

Alongside the disruptions, the city saw a marked decrease in temperatures, providing some relief from heightened humidity levels. While the majority of the region witnessed considerable rainfall, certain neighbourhoods recorded higher amounts than others.

Mayur Vihar Registers Highest Rainfall

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that Mayur Vihar received the most rainfall within Delhi, totalling 102.5 mm between 8:30 am on July 8 and 8:30 am on July 9. This figure made it the sole weather station in the capital to exceed 10 cm of rainfall during this 24-hour period.

Other areas also recorded substantial rainfall. Pusa received 83.0 mm, while Lodi Road logged 80.2 mm, and Ridge measured 77.8 mm. The city’s primary observation centre at Safdarjung noted 72.6 mm of precipitation, providing an overview of the capital’s overall weather conditions.

Additionally, stations such as Palam captured 63.0 mm, Narayana 62.5 mm, and Janakpuri 62.0 mm. Other areas, including Ayanagar, Najafgarh, CRPF Campus, and Jafarpur, also measured lower totals, indicating a varied distribution of rainfall throughout Delhi.

Impact on Daily Life and Ongoing Weather Conditions

This recent downpour follows a series of active monsoon days that have brought the daytime temperatures closer to seasonal norms, following an extended period of excessive heat and humidity. Commuters faced challenges as the heavy rain disrupted travel throughout the city.

While the rains have alleviated the oppressive weather conditions, they have exposed the city’s ongoing monsoon-related issues. Reports of adverse incidents, such as a tree being uprooted outside the National Heart Institute, further complicated the traffic situation in that area, damaging parked vehicles.

The IMD has forecasted that monsoon activity will remain robust over Delhi and neighbouring NCR regions, with the likelihood of more rainfall throughout the day. Residents have been cautioned to take precautions while travelling, especially in locations prone to waterlogging and traffic delays.
