Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta demonstrated her commitment to reducing urban pollution and traffic congestion on May 18 by opting for public transport instead of her official vehicle. She initiated her commute by walking from her official residence, Mukhyamantri Jan Seva Sadan in Civil Lines, to Lok Niwas for a scheduled meeting with Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu.

After the meeting, Gupta continued her journey by walking to the Kashmere Gate Metro Station. She boarded a train heading to the ITO Metro Station, subsequently taking a public feeder bus to reach her office at the Delhi Secretariat. Throughout this transit, she was accompanied by senior leaders, including Parvesh Verma and Ravindra Indraj.

Launch of the ‘Metro Monday’ Initiative

Gupta’s commute was part of the newly introduced ‘Metro Monday’ initiative by the Delhi government. This initiative falls under the broader national campaign termed ‘Mera Bharat, Mera Yogdan’. In response to her call, ministers and government officials were encouraged to utilise the Metro and other public transport systems to reach their respective offices.

Through this initiative, CM Gupta is advocating for a cultural shift towards public transportation to address the escalating pollution levels and traffic issues in Delhi. She highlighted that collective efforts from both citizens and the government could bring about significant improvements in urban mobility and air quality.

Expressing her views to the media, Gupta emphasised the importance of public transport, stating, “I appeal to all citizens to make maximum use of public transportation. This will not only conserve the nation’s fuel resources, but it is also absolutely essential for our city, Delhi.” She urged every individual to incorporate the Metro and bus services into their daily routines, even on a small scale.

Emphasising Last-Mile Connectivity and Community Participation

During her journey, Gupta noted the government’s ongoing efforts to improve last-mile connectivity, an essential aspect of enhancing public transport effectiveness. She stated that if every individual makes even a minor contribution by using the available transit systems, it could lead to substantial benefits for Delhi as a whole.

Highlighting the importance of this collective initiative, she expressed gratitude towards the numerous residents who participated in the mass campaign aimed at fostering a cleaner and more efficient Delhi. “Together, we will make Delhi even better,” Gupta affirmed.

In conclusion, the CM acknowledged that addressing urban challenges, including pollution and traffic congestion, requires collaborative action from both the government and citizens. She reiterated that today’s participation in the ‘Metro Monday’ initiative showcases a united effort to tackle these pressing issues facing the city.
