Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated eighteen ‘Namo Oxygen Parks’ in Maidangarhi, coinciding with World Environment Day 2026. This initiative is part of a broader drive aimed at enhancing environmental awareness and promoting urban greenery in the capital. During the inauguration, CM Gupta also participated in the planting of a sapling, highlighting the importance of local engagement in environmental conservation efforts.

The ‘Namo Oxygen Park’ initiative focuses on raising awareness about pollution control and aims to expand green spaces throughout Delhi. At the launch event, she was accompanied by Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa and Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav, both of whom took part in similar sapling planting activities.

The ceremony at Maidangarhi served as a crucial platform to unveil the projects aimed at improving the city’s air quality and sustainability. Minister Yadav and CM Gupta jointly initiated the launch of the eighteen parks, which are intended to become vital green hubs for local communities.

Local Involvement Encouraged for Park Maintenance

At the event, CM Gupta called for the establishment of local caretaking committees for each of the parks to ensure their proper maintenance. She expressed optimism regarding the planting of 1.5 million trees and saplings across the national capital this year. Her statement underscored the collaborative effort required from citizens in taking care of these new green spaces.

CM Gupta articulated that local involvement is crucial for the upkeep and protection of the newly planted trees. She stated, “When local residents get involved, the trees will receive better maintenance, watering, and protection; this kind of sustained effort is essential for Delhi.” She also urged the community to embrace the initiative symbolically linked to the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ programme launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

She elaborated that communal participation will enhance the overall effectiveness of the initiative, contributing to a greener and more sustainable Delhi. The Chief Minister reiterated the importance of each resident’s role in nurturing the environment.

Prime Minister Modi Acknowledges Environmental Conservation Efforts

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his greetings and recognition to individuals committed to environmental conservation. He praised the measures taken by the government towards safeguarding natural ecosystems and highlighted the success of expanding green cover as well as boosting wildlife populations in the country.

Modi’s remarks were part of a larger recognition of World Environment Day, which has been observed annually on June 5 since its inception by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 during the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. The first event took place in 1973 under the theme “Only One Earth.”

Each year, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) designates a specific theme for World Environment Day, along with a global host country. This strategy aims to direct international focus and action towards significant environmental issues, fostering collaborative efforts to tackle pressing challenges faced by the planet.
