Delhi Anticipates Significant Heatwave on Sunday, Northeast Faces Heavy Rain

The CSR Journal Magazine

India is experiencing a dramatic contrast in weather, with one region witnessing heavy rainfall while another is engulfed in extreme heat. This unusual atmospheric divide resembles a scene from a cinematic portrayal rather than the typical climate of April. As residents of the northeastern states prepare for torrential downpours, those in northern and western regions are desperately seeking shelter from the searing sun. On April 12, 2026, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts that this division will intensify.

The current forecast indicates that residents in Assam and Meghalaya should be prepared for light to moderate rainfall. Reports from the IMD suggest a likelihood of heavy showers particularly in Assam, which may be accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and winds reaching 30 to 40 kilometres per hour. Arunachal Pradesh is also under alert due to isolated heavy rainfall expected in the region tomorrow. Such pre-monsoon precipitation is a result of strong moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal, colliding with the Himalayan foothills.

Forecast for Northwest India

In stark contrast, the northwest including New Delhi is expected to remain dry. However, the real concern is the rising temperatures in the area. Heatwave alerts have been issued for states like Odisha and Chhattisgarh due to the anticipated increase in maximum temperatures. The IMD predicts a temperature rise of six to eight degrees Celsius over the coming days, with New Delhi likely to experience temperatures between 34 and 36 degrees Celsius by tomorrow.

This unexpected temperature surge is being driven by a subtropical westerly jet stream. Furthermore, the absence of a significant western disturbance deprives the region of potential relief from the high temperatures. As residents prepare for the rising mercury, health advisories may be forthcoming to mitigate the impacts of the extreme heat.

According to the IMD, the heatwave conditions will not be confined to the northern regions alone. Central India is also expecting a rise in temperatures, typically three to five degrees Celsius above the norm. States such as Odisha and Chhattisgarh are under a yellow watch, indicating the possibility of heatwave conditions developing in isolated areas.

Coastal Weather Conditions

In addition to the heatwave in the north, coastal areas such as Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu are predicted to experience hot and humid conditions. The IMD attributes this situation to increasing solar radiation as the sun shifts towards the Tropic of Cancer, causing swift heating of the landmass. As such, residents in these coastal areas should prepare themselves for discomfort during the upcoming days.

The National Weather Service advises that individuals in both the hot and rainy regions take necessary precautions. While the northeast prepares for heavy rain, those in the north and west are urged to stay hydrated and limit outdoor activities, especially during peak hours when the sun’s intensity is at its highest. This weather scenario serves as a reminder of the diverse climatic conditions present in a vast country like India.

Monitoring and updates will continue to be provided by the IMD as the situation develops. Residents are encouraged to remain informed and heed any warnings that may be issued in response to this contrasting weather phenomenon impacting different parts of the nation.
