Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Engages in Talks with Chinese, Russian Counterparts at SCO

The CSR Journal Magazine

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh participated in significant discussions with his Chinese counterpart, Admiral Dong Jun, during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Defence Ministers’ meeting held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. This interaction is part of a series of strategic conversations Singh is conducting with regional leaders to address pressing security and stability issues.

In addition to his meeting with Admiral Dong, Singh also interacted with the Russian Defence Minister, Andrei Belousov. These diplomatic exchanges are a key element of his official engagements in the region as the global security landscape evolves.

On the same day, Singh commenced his activities by paying homage to fallen heroes at Victory Square, laying a wreath in recognition of their sacrifice. This act marked a solemn commencement to his official agenda for the visit.

Agenda of the SCO Defence Ministers’ Meeting

Rajnath Singh’s visit coincides with the SCO Defence Ministers’ meeting, where the emphasis is expected to be on regional security and the ongoing crisis in West Asia. Defence chiefs from member nations are to deliberate on vital topics such as international peace, counter-terrorism efforts, and enhanced cooperation within the organisation.

As indicated by the Defence Ministry, the summit takes place amidst ongoing conflicts in West Asia, which will shape discussions on strategies to alleviate the ramifications of these hostilities. The SCO is recognised as one of the largest political and economic bodies globally and plays a significant role in addressing regional challenges.

Prior to his departure from New Delhi, Singh highlighted India’s intentions on the international stage, particularly regarding global peace. He reiterated India’s firm stance against terrorism and extremism through a message on X. This underscores India’s commitment to contributing positively to global security amidst various challenges.

Ceremonial Reception and Meetings

Upon his arrival in Bishkek, Defence Minister Singh was received with a traditional ceremonial welcome, which included the offering of Borsok, a well-known Kyrgyz delicacy. This gesture reflects the cultural importance of hospitality in the region and sets a cordial tone for his engagements.

Besides participating in the formal discussions at the summit, Singh is also anticipated to hold additional bilateral meetings with various counterparts. These interactions will focus on mutual security interests, allowing India to strengthen its diplomatic ties with other nations involved in the SCO.

The current membership of the SCO includes India, Russia, China, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Iran, and Belarus. Since India became a full member in 2017, it has assumed a significant role within the organisation, particularly after taking on the rotating chairmanship in 2023. The SCO, originally established in 2001 by Russia, China, and several Central Asian states, has matured into a major regional influence over the past two decades.

Last year, during India’s presidency, the strategic influence of the organisation expanded further with the official inclusion of Iran as a full member state. As discussions unfold in Bishkek, the focus remains on collaborative efforts to address pressing regional and international security issues.
