Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, alongside Army Chief General Dhiraj Seth and other senior military officials, paid homage to soldiers who lost their lives during the Kargil War at the Kargil War Memorial in Dras on Sunday. This event marked the 27th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas, commemorating India’s military achievement in the 1999 conflict.

Ceremonial Wreath-Laying Event

Singh, who arrived in Dras the previous day, served as the chief guest at the wreath-laying ceremony, known as the ‘Shradhanjali Samaroh’. Notable figures, including Ladakh Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena and Lt Gen Pratik Sharma, the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Northern Command, also participated by laying wreaths to honour those who sacrificed their lives. The solemn event was marked by the presence of various senior military officers who gathered to pay their respects.

On that morning, as the sun illuminated the Dras Valley, Singh laid a wreath at the memorial, reinforcing the significance of this occasion. The ceremonial proceedings were complemented by an aerial tribute when three helicopters, led by an advanced light helicopter and followed by two Cheetal helicopters, flew in an arrowhead formation to shower flower petals over the memorial.

On the preceding evening, Dras experienced inclement weather with rain; however, it did not deter the Army from hosting ‘Shaurya Sandhya’ at the war memorial. This event aimed to honour the bravery of the Indian soldiers during Operation Vijay and to remember those who lost their lives fighting for the nation. Singh attended this ceremony, where he presented a ceremonial ‘kalash’ to families of the fallen soldiers, acknowledging their sacrifice.

Significance of Kargil Vijay Diwas

The anniversary being observed signifies India’s triumph in reclaiming strategic heights in Kargil during 1999. The soldiers faced extreme challenges operating under heavy enemy fire on snow-covered terrains, and their determination resulted in a successful military operation. Kargil Vijay Diwas specifically commemorates the culmination of Operation Vijay on July 26, 1999, which marked a pivotal moment in India’s military history.

This day is not only a remembrance of past sacrifices but also serves as a testament to the courage displayed by the Indian forces, who fought valiantly for their country. The events surrounding this day are designed to instil a sense of pride and awareness among the younger generations about the sacrifices made by the armed forces for the nation’s security and integrity.
