The CSR Journal Magazine

A sudden storm, accompanied by heavy rainfall and strong winds, wreaked havoc in Sultanpur district, Uttar Pradesh, on April 30, 2026. The extreme weather conditions led to the death of seven individuals, including two children, while at least twenty-one others sustained injuries. A number of localities including Baldirai, Haliyapur, Akhand Nagar, Bandhua Kala, and Kudwar were among the areas most impacted by these severe weather conditions.

Officials reported that the havoc was primarily marked by incidents of house collapses, falling trees, and various accidents resulting from the extreme effects of the storm. The suddenness and severity of the situation took many residents by surprise, leading to catastrophic outcomes.

Details of Casualties and Injuries

Among the deceased was twenty-year-old Mahendra Tiwari from Kudwar, who tragically lost his life when an electricity pole fell on him. He had recently returned home just ten days prior to the storm for his sister’s wedding, scheduled for May 7. He was on his way to a pre-wedding function at the time of the incident.

In Baldirai, two fatalities were reported: eight-year-old Mahima, who was killed when bricks fell from her house, and fifty-eight-year-old Rambaran, who succumbed to injuries sustained when a tree collapsed on his home, severely injuring his wife in the process. In Haliyapur, thirty-five-year-old Rita, a mother of three, died after a mud wall and thatched roof gave way during the storm.

In separate incidents, another child, eight-year-old Sureman from Akhand Nagar, died instantly, while two others were critically injured and required hospitalisation. Additional casualties included forty-year-old Sushma Gupta, who perished when a tree fell near her residence in Bandhua Kala, and seventy-year-old Kewala Devi, who was killed by a collapsing mud wall in Kurebhar.

Emergency Response and Infrastructure Damage

The storm not only resulted in human loss but also inflicted significant damage to local infrastructure. A toll plaza on the Purvanchal Expressway was severely affected, resulting in disruptions that lasted for several hours. The district administration reported that multiple individuals were injured across various towns and were being treated at local health centres.

District Magistrate Inderjeet Singh expressed sorrow over the tragic losses and mandated that immediate relief be provided to the families impacted by the storm. He announced that compensation from the State Disaster Response Fund would be dispensed within 24 hours to assist those affected.

In the aftermath, teams from the revenue and health departments have been deployed to conduct relief and rescue operations. An evaluation of the damage caused by the storm is currently in progress. Furthermore, residents are being urged to heed weather advisories and to stay indoors during hazardous weather conditions to ensure their safety.
