Dacoit Jagan Gurjar Killed in Ajmer Jail Incident

The CSR Journal Magazine

Notorious criminal Jagan Gurjar was reportedly killed by a fellow inmate inside a high-security jail in Ajmer, Rajasthan. The authorities disclosed that the incident occurred sometime between 11 am and 3 pm on Sunday. Police investigations indicate that Gurjar was allegedly strangled with a towel during a fight inside their shared cell.

A forensic team was dispatched to the jail to gather evidence, while Gurjar’s body has been sent to the mortuary for a post-mortem examination. Initial enquiries suggest that the altercation stemmed from a minor issue between the two inmates.

Ajmer Superintendent of Police Harshvardhan Agarwalla confirmed the details, stating that Vishnu, the accused inmate, was the one who had been living with Gurjar in the same cell at the time of the incident.

Background of Jagan Gurjar

Jagan Gurjar was a well-known figure in criminal circles, with nearly 100 cases registered against him at different police stations. His notoriety began to surface in 2008 when he allegedly threatened to detonate explosives at the residence of Vasundhara Raje, the then Chief Minister of Rajasthan, in Dholpur. The following year, he surrendered in front of Congress leader Sachin Pilot.

In June 2019, Gurjar faced arrest for allegedly assaulting two women and damaging their clothing. A large police operation involving nearly 500 personnel was organised to apprehend him. Again, in February 2022, he was taken into custody over threats made against Girraj Malinga, who was a Congress MLA at the time.

Gurjar began his criminal career in 1994 and was first arrested in 2001. His criminal trajectory continued with multiple arrests and subsequent releases on bail. He was known to operate in the notorious ravines of Chambal, spanning Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, areas with a reputation for sheltering bandits and dacoits.

Investigation Underway

The investigation into Gurjar’s death is ongoing, focusing on the circumstances surrounding the alleged altercation. Police are scrutinising Vishnu’s statement, which claims he used a towel to strangle Gurjar, as well as any physical evidence gathered from the cell.

Officials reported that the body of Gurjar did not exhibit visible signs of injury. A jail official noted that the two inmates had been locked in their cell from 11 am, and when checked at 3 pm, Gurjar was found deceased.

Vishnu has been incarcerated in the high-security facility for the last three years, while Gurjar was transferred there in March 2026. As the investigation progresses, authorities aim to clarify the details of the scuffle and the events that led to Gurjar’s untimely death.
