The protest in Jharkhand has intensified, leading to the resignation of three members of the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC). Ajita Bhattacharya, Anima Hansda, and Jamal Ahmed stepped down on August 9, 2023, following pressure from the state government amid widespread allegations of recruitment irregularities. The resignations come as the students prepare for a ‘Vidhan Sabha gherao’ march demanding accountability.

Jharkhand Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar accepted these resignations after consultations with the government. The JPSC members’ departure has been interpreted by some as an acknowledgment of the issues surrounding the commission.

Protests have included a flashlight demonstration by students, who have been advocating for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the alleged irregularities in the JPSC-JSSC examination processes. Despite the government’s proposals, the aspirants remain firm on their demand for a CBI probe, stating that the ongoing investigations are insufficient.

Government’s Multi-Pronged Action Plan Announced

In response to the protests, the Jharkhand government has unveiled a comprehensive action plan. This includes investigations by the Crime Investigation Department (CID) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) into the alleged malpractices associated with recent recruitment exams. Minister Sudivya Kumar Sonu indicated that the CID would focus on criminal aspects while the ED would examine financial irregularities.

During discussions lasting three days, the government reportedly agreed to many demands from the protesting students, including the cancellation of specific examinations. However, it clarified that certain demands, such as the cancellation of the CGL exam, could not be honoured due to legal constraints.

Alongside the investigations, the government has proposed forming an expert committee to suggest reforms to the recruitment process. However, protest leaders have dismissed these proposals as inadequate, emphasising their ongoing call for a CBI inquiry.

Students Maintain Call for CBI Inquiry

Despite the government’s announcements, student leaders have expressed dissatisfaction with the ongoing discussions. They argue that the proposals do not address their primary concern: the need for a CBI investigation into the alleged corruption within the JPSC. Leaders have stated that the agitation will continue until their demands are met.

Student protests have gained momentum, with many calling for the cancellation of multiple examinations connected to the JPSC. Some protesters argue that the recent resignations of JPSC members indicate deeper issues within the commission, suggesting that mere resignations will not lead to meaningful accountability.

Officials have assured that security measures are being implemented to ensure the safety of the demonstrators during the anticipated Assembly march. An emphasis on peaceful protests has been reiterated by police authorities, who are prepared to respond if tensions escalate. Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has also conveyed his commitment to transparency and justice in resolving the students’ grievances.

In reaction to the situation, various political figures have voiced their support for the students, indicating a growing concern regarding the alleged irregularities in recruitment processes across the state. These developments highlight the ongoing challenges in addressing public grievances amid calls for reform and accountability in state-run examinations.
