The self-styled godman and rape convict Asaram Bapu has been granted the permission to continue with the medical facilities, accommodation and permissions provided to him by the High Court and the Supreme Court earlier. The Rajasthan High court said on Friday that he will continue to get all mentioned facilities during his incarceration, even though his appeal has been dismissed. The single-judge Bench presided over by Sanjeev Prakash Purohit passed the order while disposing of the writ petition filed on behalf of Asaram that challenged the withdrawal of certain facilities given to him by the Jodhpur Central Jail administration.

Asaram to retain medical aid and attendants in jail

Justice Purohit said that owing to Asaram’s health condition the required health care won’t cease. It was also noted that the facilities have been granted to him in order to safeguard his health and medical needs and also human rights.

Asaram’s counsel said that even though Asaram’s health has not improved, many facilities that were provided to him previously have been stopped and this is adversely affecting his treatment and overall well-being. Upon examining the health condition of convict, court noted that Asaram, 85, suffers from many chronic diseases that includes cardiac, kidney-related complications, osteoporosis and other age-related ailments and needs care and supervision.

Court noted the circumstances and immediately asked the jail authorities to ensure the facilities are provided. Another facility of two assistants will continue, however the court rejected the request to select an assistant according to his choice. It will be the Court’s decision to select willing people to assist Asaram.

The request to have a permanent ambulance at disposal was rejected by the court, however jail authorities were directed to make arrangements in emergency situations. Court also allowed Asaram to have a private physician Dr Sachit Bhola to check up and examine Asaram every 15 days. All facilities will continue as per the Supreme Court and the High Court order.

Facilities denied by Court

The Court denied additional support requested by him for additional temperature-controlled ward and permanent deployment of a private ambulance, however, the earlier sanctioned facilities will continue to Asaram. This order came after the Division Bench comprising Justice Arun Monga and Justice Yogendra Kumar Purohit dismissed his appeal and upheld his conviction.
