Congress Reiterates Role for Siddaramaiah Despite Transition in Karnataka Leadership

The CSR Journal Magazine

Siddaramaiah has officially transferred leadership in Karnataka to D.K. Shivakumar, but the Congress party has emphasised that Siddaramaiah’s political journey is not yet complete. Following the Congress Legislature Party meeting, where Shivakumar was elected as the new leader, party general secretary K.C. Venugopal reaffirmed the need for Siddaramaiah to maintain an active role in both state and national politics.

Shivakumar’s appointment as the Chief Minister comes just two days after Siddaramaiah resigned, as directed by the party’s high command. Venugopal expressed that Siddaramaiah’s contributions had significantly strengthened the Congress, especially against the BJP’s criticisms regarding the leadership change. He directly addressed Siddaramaiah, noting, “We will not allow you to rest,” reiterating the need for his experience and leadership.

During discussions surrounding the shift in leadership, it was purported that Siddaramaiah was offered a position in the Rajya Sabha, alongside a larger role in Delhi, particularly as the party’s influential OBC figure ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. However, Siddaramaiah, 78 years old, opted to stay focused on Karnataka’s political landscape rather than accept the offer.

Siddaramaiah’s Support for New Chief Minister

At the CLP meeting, Siddaramaiah himself was instrumental in proposing Shivakumar’s name for the Chief Minister position. His suggestion was seconded by senior leader G. Parameshwara, leading to a unanimous endorsement from the legislators present. Following this, Siddaramaiah conveyed a heartfelt message to Shivakumar and called for a renewed commitment to protect the Constitution and the secular values of the nation.

In his address, Siddaramaiah asserted the need for a “second freedom struggle” aimed at preserving national unity and combating divisive politics. He claimed that “those who killed Gandhi are now setting out to glorify Godse,” expressing concern over the polarising forces at play within the country that seek to exploit caste and religious identities.

He conveyed trust in Shivakumar’s abilities to spearhead Karnataka’s growth and development, praising his organisational skills and loyalty to the party. Siddaramaiah emphasised that the new Chief Minister is well-equipped with the qualities necessary for this significant responsibility.

Future Prospects for Congress in Karnataka

With Shivakumar now at the helm, Venugopal mentioned that the Congress aims to reform its governance and return to power in the upcoming 2028 Karnataka Assembly elections. He commended Shivakumar’s longstanding dedication to the party and described his ascent to the Chief Minister position as reflective of years of hard work and commitment.

While the Congress leadership has displayed a façade of unity through this transition, there are reports of intense competition for cabinet positions among various members. Several outgoing ministers are aiming to retain their roles, while new candidates are actively pursuing opportunities within the party structure.

Discussions hint at a cabinet that would blend both veteran members and newcomers, ensuring a fair representation of caste and regional interests, while also accommodating those loyal to Siddaramaiah. Speculation is rife regarding the potential appointment of more than one Deputy Chief Minister in the new administration. Additionally, the involvement of Siddaramaiah’s son, Yathindra, in discussions with Congress leaders has prompted speculation about his prospective role in the cabinet.

In conjunction with these developments, conversations about appointing the next Karnataka Congress president are in progress, with reports suggesting that senior MLA and former minister Satish Jarkiholi may be poised to succeed Shivakumar in this organisational position.
