Siddaramaiah Meets Ashok Gehlot In Jaipur Hours After Stepping Down As Karnataka CM

The CSR Journal Magazine

Outgoing Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah convened with former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot in Jaipur after his recent resignation. The meeting took place at the Jaipur airport after Siddaramaiah arrived in Rajasthan’s capital due to adverse weather conditions that prevented his travel to New Delhi. Congress General Secretary Randeep Surjewala was also present during the engagement between the two leaders.

Siddaramaiah took to his official social media account to announce the meeting, describing it as a warm interaction with Gehlot. This meeting came shortly after Siddaramaiah stepped down from his role earlier on May 29, 2023, marking the end of his term as Chief Minister.

Following his resignation, Siddaramaiah stated his gratitude to both the Congress leadership and the citizens of Karnataka for the privilege of holding office. He articulated his respect for the constitutional responsibilities inherent in political roles, expressing appreciation for the opportunity to represent the state’s diverse populace.

Resignation Context

Siddaramaiah’s resignation was reportedly in compliance with directives from the Congress high command. He submitted his resignation to Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot, following a significant gathering held at his official residence, ‘Kaveri’. This transition in leadership has been interpreted by many observers as a pivotal moment for the state’s political landscape.

In a press briefing after his resignation, Siddaramaiah expressed his deep appreciation for key figures in the Congress Party, including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Mallikarjun Kharge. He highlighted the significant mandate received by the Congress party in Karnataka, noting the victory of the party along with independent legislators in the recent elections. He made it clear that the party retained a strong majority in the Legislative Assembly.

The outgoing Chief Minister remarked, “Our party has won 135+1 seats,” which included support from two independent legislators. He claimed that their combined strength confirms the party’s majority, allowing for a smooth leadership transition in alignment with constitutional requirements.

Future Political Developments

Siddaramaiah indicated that the necessary constitutional processes would be adhered to in selecting the next Chief Minister. He expressed belief that the Governor would act in accordance with these terms. His comments suggested an expectation of a seamless transfer of power, as he articulated the procedural steps that would follow his resignation.

“Once the Chief Minister resigns, the next Chief Minister should be appointed according to constitutional norms,” he asserted. He underscored the necessity of following established protocols during this transition phase, reinforcing the importance of legality and order in governance.

Throughout his remarks, Siddaramaiah maintained a focus on the party’s aspiration to continue its governance despite the leadership change. His confidence in the party’s future underscores a commitment to its mandate and to the expectations of the electorate in Karnataka.
