The Congress party’s Member of Parliament, Jothimani, has called for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to cease its “petty politics” in light of ongoing protests related to the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). Jothimani emphasised the necessity for all opposition parties to unite under a single banner to effectively combat issues facing the nation. Her comments were made following AAP’s accusations directed at Congress regarding an alleged collaboration with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in reference to Rahul Gandhi’s recent protests.

“The AAP should stop their petty politics and see the larger picture,” Jothimani stated. “As an opposition, we all must present a united front and fight together for the concerns of the citizens.” Her remarks highlight a growing frustration among opposition parties amidst accusations and counter-accusations over political strategies in response to critical issues.

Accusations of Political Alliance

The tension escalated when former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi of the AAP made allegations suggesting a covert understanding between Rahul Gandhi and the BJP. A particular focus of her critique was the government’s response to the ongoing protests surrounding a NEET paper leak. Atishi remarked that the government neglected the voices of protestors at Jantar Mantar for an extended period but initiated discussions promptly after Congress held a demonstration near the Prime Minister’s residence on July 20.

In a social media post, Atishi highlighted the disparity in governmental responses, comparing the treatment of the long-standing protestors at Jantar Mantar with that of Rahul Gandhi’s protest. “In one hour, the Modi government starts dialogue with Rahul Gandhi,” she noted, expressing outrage at what she termed a frustrating inconsistency in the political arena.

Jothimani responded to these accusations by emphasising the need to prioritise the issues at hand, namely the concerns raised by the student community regarding the integrity of examination systems. She dismissed any suggestion of a political alliance, asserting that the focus should remain on solving the problems affecting students rather than engaging in political disputes.

Protests Against Government Actions

On July 22, Congress party workers initiated protests in various states to express their discontent regarding the police actions during the July 20 demonstrations in Delhi. The police detained several opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, which has further inflamed tensions between Congress and the ruling BJP.

The Congress party’s demands have been clear, insisting on the resignations of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan following the recent controversies surrounding examination regulations. Jothimani articulated strong condemnation of the current government, accusing it of contributing to the turmoil surrounding national competitive examinations.

She claimed that the ongoing leaks of examination papers reflect a systemic failure, suggesting that these incidents have put the future of many students at risk. “Every paper has been leaked… Every system has been broken by the BJP itself,” Jothimani asserted. She argued that the government must take accountability for these issues, particularly highlighting the role of the Education Minister during these crises.
