Congress President and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, has reiterated the stance of the Opposition to persist in Parliament until they receive satisfactory answers from Union Home Minister Amit Shah. He made these remarks on August 12, following reports of police allegedly using excessive force against student protesters in various locations, including the national capital.

Kharge emphasised that the opposition will maintain its current approach and stated, “Nothing will happen tomorrow. We will continue to do what we have been doing till now.” This declaration underscores the ongoing tensions between the government and the Opposition regarding the treatment of protesters.

In a demonstration held that day, opposition leaders vociferously called for a response from Shah, chanting slogans such as “Amit Shah Jawab Do” (Amit Shah, provide an answer). This protest is part of a broader pattern of dissent directed at the government’s handling of student demonstrations across the country.

Concerns Over FCRA Bill

The Opposition is also pressing for the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) Bill to be referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee for review. Kharge has stated that he believes the Bill should be sent for further scrutiny. The FCRA is designed to regulate the acceptance and utilisation of foreign contributions by various entities in India, ensuring that funds are used for their intended purposes.

The Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, was presented in the Lok Sabha on March 25 and is presently under consideration. The revised rules pertaining to this Bill were officially notified on June 22 and are currently in effect. The Opposition’s insistence on a detailed examination of the Bill reflects broader concerns about transparency and governance.

During the day, both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha had sessions interrupted and ultimately adjourned until 2 pm, indicative of the increasing discord within Parliament. The disruptions are linked to the ongoing demands for accountability from the government concerning its handling of demonstrators and the associated law enforcement measures.

Allegations of Police Violence

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has been particularly vocal, launching a strong critique of Amit Shah’s accountability concerning the police’s alleged violent responses to student protests. She questioned the justifiability of using force such as lathis and pellet guns against peaceful demonstrators, specifically highlighting the severe measures reportedly employed against students in different states, including the deployment of AK-47s in Bihar.

In her address to the media, Gandhi asked, “What do you think, who is responsible? When thousands of students gather and they have one demand, you shower lathis on them, you fire pellet guns at them.” Her remarks come amid escalating scrutiny on the government’s treatment of students advocating for their rights and futures.

This situation has intensified the ongoing confrontation between the governing bodies and the Opposition, leading to frequent disruptions in parliamentary proceedings. Both Kharge and Gandhi, along with other opposition figures, are pressing for clarity and accountability from the government regarding these pressing issues.
