Commonwealth Games 2026 Day 2 Recap: Jhandu Kumar Secures Bronze for India

The CSR Journal Magazine

India’s second day at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow was marked by a commendable but mixed performance, with para powerlifter Jhandu Kumar’s bronze medal standing out as the highlight. His achievement is particularly remarkable given his journey from driving an e-rickshaw in Bihar to reaching the Commonwealth podium, making it a significant moment for India.

This milestone provided both inspiration and a talking point, as it was India’s first medal of the Games, setting a hopeful tone for the country’s athletes. The medal came amidst various promising performances in other events, further showcasing India’s potential in the competition.

Strong Performances Across Disciplines

Boxer Jadumani Singh initiated India’s boxing campaign with a strong start, defeating Scotland’s Aaron Cullen by unanimous decision in the men’s 55kg bout. Singh displayed dominance throughout the match, overcoming a height disadvantage through his speed and strategic punching, which neutralised Cullen’s reach.

This victory marked a significant milestone for Singh, transitioning from the 50kg category to 55kg, where he has demonstrated enhanced strength and confidence, preparing to face Pakistan’s Sumama Rehman in the pre-quarterfinals.

Additionally, India’s lawn bowls team continued its impressive run with two consecutive victories. Notable performers included gold medallists Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinki Singh, who secured a 2-0 win against South Africa. Their consistency exemplifies their adaptation from the fours format, which was eliminated from this edition of the Games.

Close Calls and Frustrations for Indian Athletes

In swimming, para athlete R.V.V.B.K. Budigina narrowly missed out on a medal in the men’s 100m freestyle S13, finishing fourth with a time of 57.57 seconds. His teammate, Ali Imam, also competed but placed seventh in the final with a time of 1:03.73. In the able-bodied events, two-time Olympian Srihari Nataraj failed to progress past the semifinals of the men’s 50m backstroke.

The women para powerlifters experienced disappointment as none could replicate Jhandu Kumar’s podium success. Jaspreet Kaur excelled by topping her group with a lift of 100kg but ultimately placed sixth in the overall standings. Suman Devi and Kasthuri Rajamani also faced challenges, with Rajamani failing to register a successful lift.

Meanwhile, India’s artistic gymnasts displayed encouraging results despite not medalling in the team events. The women’s team finished in sixth place, with two gymnasts, Pranati Nayak and Ruthuja Nataraj, qualifying for individual apparatus finals, highlighting their individual capabilities.

Looking Ahead to Future Competitions

While Jhandu Kumar was the only athlete to secure a medal on Day 2, India showcased numerous significant performances that indicate potential for further success. The country maintains high hopes as athletes like Jadumani Singh contribute to a positive outlook for the boxing events and the unbeaten lawn bowls team aims for continued success.

As more medal events approach over the weekend, many Indian competitors are positioned to improve upon their performances, and increase the likelihood of adding to the medal tally. The results so far have provided a foundation for optimism as the Commonwealth Games progress.
