The Uttar Pradesh Government is achieving remarkable success through the ongoing ‘Operation Kayakalp’. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s mission is to ensure quality basic education facilities across state.
The mission was launched by the Basic Education Department in 2018 under the CM’s directives. The initiative aims to revamp primary and upper primary schools throughout the state. Meanwhile, its positive impact is now becoming clearly visible in Uttar Pradesh.
19 Key infrastructure programmes
Under this ambitious programme, schools are being transformed on the basis of 19 key infrastructure parameters. These include essential facilities such as clean drinking water, functional toilets, boundary walls, safe buildings, and proper seating arrangements.
The goal is to turn schools into 5-star rated institutions, setting a benchmark for excellence. Through this transformation, not only are the schools being developed as model educational institutions, but they are also becoming the most exemplary buildings in their respective gram sabhas.
Operation Kayakalp
Since the launch of Operation Kayakalp in 2018, schools across Uttar Pradesh have seen major improvements. According to the Basic Education Department, out of the 19 set parameters for upgrading schools, more than 80% of the work has been successfully completed on 18 of them.
Notably, 100% targets have been achieved in 9 key areas such as clean drinking water, toilets, blackboards, and school electrification. In 8 other areas, over 94% of the work has been completed. This has created visible change in government schools, giving hope to millions of students and their families for a better future.
Major progress in the state
The report also highlights that, compared to 2018, major progress has been made in school furniture supply up from 19% to 65%. Clean drinking water facilities, which stood at 67% in 2018, have now reached 100% coverage.
Other facilities such as boys’ and girls’ toilets, multi-handwashing units, black/green/whiteboards, school wall painting, ramps with railings, and campus electrification have all achieved full completion. Even tiled toilet construction, which was at just 21% in 2018, has now reached 91% by March 2025.
Investment of Rs 11,000 crore
The report further notes that 98% of boundary wall construction with gates and 94% of kitchen renovations have been completed. In 2018, no parameter had crossed 82% progress, but now the Yogi government is moving rapidly to meet all targets.
A total investment of Rs 11,000 crore has been made in collaboration with multiple departments to improve basic facilities in schools. This massive effort is laying the foundation for a brighter, more modern education system in Uttar Pradesh.
